Head Coach Tony DeAnda had the following to say about the trip to Florida, "Shai Mason qualified for the opportunity to represent team USA at the Junior Woman's Pan Am Championships (17-20 year olds) in Chile. She wrestled very well throughout the Body Bar tournament and beat Monica Ramirez of Lindenwood University who was the 2013 college national runner up."

Jamestown College head women's wrestling coach Tony DeAnda announces Brenna Ramirez, Manistee, Mich., and Austin Wortman, Wolf Point, Mont., have signed Letters of Intent to enroll at Jamestown College and participate in women's wrestling beginning in the fall of 2013.

Ramirez has placed at various events including Body Bar, Oklahoma, and Fargo, N.D.

Brenna is a very talented and upbeat person who will bring great energy to Jamestown College and our wrestling program," DeAnda says. "She will use this energy and be a force in our upper weight categories."

Ramirez has also been active in volleyball, tennis and soccer. She plans to major in nursing or pre-medicine at Jamestown College. She is the daughter of Gonzalo Ramirez and Monica Janicki.

Wortman is a three-time placewinner at USGWA Nationals.

"We are excited to have Austin become part of Jamestown College and the wrestling program," DeAnda says. "She will certainly help lead the charge in our middle weights."

Wortman has also been active in volleyball, cross country and choir. She plans to major in nursing at Jamestown College. She is the daughter of Aimee Wortman and Jim Summers.

[Women's Wrestling] Jimmie Women Place 5th at WCWA Nationals

The Jimmie women's wrestling team capped a strong season with a fifth-place finish overall and seven All-Americans.

Amy Fearnside (109 pounds), Tiffany Sluik (123), Shai Mason (136), Christina Zamora (155), Mary Westman (155), Lilia Gudzyuk (170) and Chelsie Fleming (191) each had top seven finishes on Saturday to close the season at the WCWA National Championships in Bristol, Tenn.

The Jimmies, who finished outside the top 10 last season, made significant strides in coach Tony DeAnda's second season in charge.

"As coaches and competitors, you always think you could have done better, but big picture it was a good weekend and a good season for us," said DeAnda, trying to navigate slick roads in Illinois on Sunday while driving the bus back home. "I thought we could have very well had more All-Americans, but sometimes the calls don't go your way.

"It's a learning process for our team, but we feel like we're headed in the right direction."

Zamora, a junior from Orange County, Calif., had the top finish. She went 2-1 on Saturday to finish third at 155, going 4-1 overall.

It's en vogue in sports these days to label an athlete or a coach "the face" of a team or program.

Traditionally it is the head coach, but certain athletes can qualify.

In the brief history of the Jamestown College women's wrestling program, Tiffany Sluik would certainly be in the mix as "the face" of the Jimmies.

The Mason City, Iowa, native was one of the initial recruits of previous coach Cisco Cole and she has not disappointed.

The two-time All-American will cap off her stellar career this weekend at the WCWA National Meet in Bristol, Tenn., where she's seeded seventh at 130 pounds.

Sluik's pulled off an Adrian Peterson-esque performance even to be competing this weekend. She suffered a torn ACL in late December of 2011 and just eight months later was back on the mat.

"Wrestling runs in the family. I was brainwashed early," she joked.

Sluik has become adept at overcoming challenges.

She was the only girl on her high school team. After initially dealing with skittish coaches and teammates, she quickly won their respect over by simply winning.

"I've been fortunate in that after I showed I could compete and that it wasn't just some gimmick, I never had any problems. In fact, it was the opposite," she said. "I had really good relationships with coaches and teammates."

Jamestown College went up against the best in women's college wrestling and had a great showing at the Waldorf College Open on Saturday, January 5, 2013.

Team scores were not kept at the Waldorf College Open, but the Jimmies battled well against the likes of #1 ranked Oklahoma City and # 2 ranked King College.

As far as pins went, Oklahoma City showed their strength with a team leading 25 pins. King College was second with 12, while Jamestown was a close third with 11. The University of the Cumberlands was fourth with 5 pins.

Tiffany Sluik captured the 130 pound championship with three pins in three matches. Suik pinned her first round opponent in 0:23. She earned a 2^nd round pin in the semi-final, and then beat her Missouri Valley opponent with a first round pin at 1:04 in the championship match. For her work on Saturday and for her 2-0 mark with 2 pins on Friday against a Midland University opponent and a Missouri Baptist opponent, Sluik earned the Association of Independent Institutions Female Athlete of the Week award.

DSU's Krump receive A.I.I. weekly honors

Jamestown College's Tiffany Sluik and Dakota State University's Cameron Krump have earned top honors in the Association of Independent Institutions this week as Sluik has been named Female Athlete of the Week, while Krump has been named the Male Athlete of the Week for the week of Dec. 31-Jan. 6.

Sluik, a senior from Mason City, Iowa, was a perfect 5-0 on the mat this week and captured the 130-pound class at the Waldorf College Open. All five victories came by virtue of pin. She began the week with a pair of pins to help the Jimmies sweep matches from Missouri Baptist and Midland. Then at the Waldorf College Open, she captured her first match with a pin just 23 seconds into the first round. She then recorded a second-round pin in her semifinal match and claimed the 130-pound championship with a pin in 1:04 of the first round.

This is Sluik's second award - she won it on December 9, 2012 also.

Krump, a 6-foot-8 junior center from Colton, S.D., turned in a career night with a17-point, 14-rebound effort in a six-point win over Midland (Neb.). Both the 17 points and 14 rebounds were career highs for Krump at Dakota State, who was 7-of-9 from the field shooting. He was also 3-for-5 from the free throw line.

[Women's Wrestling] Jimmie Women Win Twice in Nebraska

At the Midland University Triangular in Fremont, NE, the Jamestown College Jimmies went 2-0 in duals.

The Jimmies beat Missouri Baptist 32-12 and host Midland University 28-19.

Jamestown College is now 11-4 in duals.

Jamestown is 3-0 vs Midland University.

The Jimmies beat Midland 34-5 on October 27 and 46-1 on December 8.

The Jimmies are 2-0 now vs Missouri Baptist.

Jamestown beat Missouri Baptist 43-6 on December 8 in Forest City, IA.

Jamestown will compete in the Waldorf Open in Forest City, IA, on Saturday.

The Jamestown College Jimmie Women wrestlers dominated the Waldorf Duals in Forest City, Iowa, on Saturday, December 8.

The Jimmie women won all three dual matches in dominant fashion.

The closest result was a 43-6 win over Missouri Baptist College.

The Jimmies were cruel visitors and beat host Waldorf 42-4.

Jamestown also crushed Midland by a tally of 46-1.

The Jimmies finished off their 2012 schedule with a dual record of 9-4 after the three wins on Saturday.

As a result of her three fall performance, Tiffany Sluik, at 130 pounds, earned the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) Female Athlete of the Week award.

Sluik, a senior from Mason City, Iowa, went 3-0 while wrestling in the 130-pound ranks at the Waldorf Warrior Wrestling Duals in Forest City, Iowa. She helped the Jimmies beat Waldorf with her second period fall of Ali Schulte at 0:32 of the second period and then recorded a tech fall over her Midland opponent in the second period by scores of 6-0 and 8-0. She finished up her day with a second-period fall over her Missouri Baptist opponent at the 1:35 mark.

Head Coach Tony DeAnda said, "The ladies wrestled well and we are pleased in direction they are heading."

[Women's Wrestling] Jimmies Win Dual, Two Champions in Open

Two Jimmies earned first-place honors at the Husky Open Saturday in Saskatoon.

Allene Somera and Tiffany Sluik each collected titles to lead Jamestown College to a fourth-place finish with 39 points.

Two JC teams competed in the meet with the other coming in seventh with 13 points. The tournament featured eight teams total.

Somera, a sophomore from Kaneohe, Hawaii, edged teammate Gem Palencia for top-place honors at 101 pounds. It was one of only two weight classes where one team had the top two placers.

Sluik, a senior from Mason City, Iowa, was the lone Jimmie entered at 123, but she cleaned up on her way to a first-place effort.

The Jimmies had three wrestlers place at 130 pounds. Shai Mason led the way with a runner-up performance. Kasey Kruczek was fifth and Analy Gonzales sixth.

Freshman Amy Fearnside had another nice day, finishing second at 109.

At 136, Mary Westman and Christina Zamora came in third and fifth, respectively.

Lilia Gudzyuk took third at 143, while Erie Bragg was fourth at 155.

Michelle Canete and Chaelynn Tan gave the Jimmies two of the top six finishers at 116. Canete was fourth and Tan sixth.

Jamestown College has one more meet before the holiday break, traveling to the Waldorf Open in Forest City, Iowa, on Dec. 8.

[Women's Wrestling] Patrica Martin signs with Jamestown College

Jamestown College head women's wrestling coach Tony DeAnda announced that Patrica Martin of Traverse City, Mich., signed a Letter of Intent to enroll at Jamestown College and participate in women's wrestling beginning in 2013.

Martin is a Body Bar champion, three-time state champion, and four-time All-American in both Freestyle and Folkstyle Nationals. She is a four-year starter on the Traverse City St. Francis High School boys' wrestling team and has more than 100 wins.

"I have known Trica Martin for about four years now and am very excited to have her commit to Jamestown College as our first recruit for 2013-14 school year," DeAnda said. "Trica is the type of student-athlete who we are trying to build our wrestling program around."

Martin is also active in cross country, dance team, volleyball, softball and National Honor Society. She plans to major in biology/pre-veterinary at Jamestown College. She is the daughter of Ted and Theresa Martin.

[Women's Wrestling] Fearnside is Champion of Missouri Open

Freshman Amy Fearnside went a perfect 4-0 to place first at 109 pounds to lead the Jimmie women's wrestling team at the Missouri Valley Open on Sunday.

Fearnside, from Morgan Hill, Calif., has been a standout in her initial season. She was the lone JC wrestler to go unbeaten in the meet.

Christina Zamora (155) went 3-1 and place second. Tiffany Sluik piled four victories en route to a third-place finish.

Alicia Hubbard had a busy seven-match day at 123 and went 5-2 to fourth. Shai Mason also racked up five wins and finished seventh at 143.

Geminette Palencia (101), Mykaela Ellis (123) and Erie Bragg (191) each had one win on the day.

The Jimmies are back in action Thanksgiving weekend when they compete Nov. 23-24 in Saskatchewan.

[Women's Wrestling] Solid weekend for Jimmie women

Oklahoma City University is the women's wrestling team others measure themselves against.

By that standard, Jamestown College head coach Tony DeAnda likes the direction his team is going.

The Jimmies advanced to the championship match against four-time defending Women's College Wrestling Association national champion OCU in the Can Am Duals Saturday night at the Larson Center. They came up short, but progress is being made.

"Obviously, they're very good and have a great program, but I thought we wrestled them pretty tough," DeAnda said. "I think our girls are starting to buy in to that OCU is not as big and bad as they claim. I think we showed we weren't going to back down against them."

The Jimmies defeated Missouri Valley College and Midland Lutheran in dual action.

"We wanted to bring in some teams we didn't wrestle last weekend. � For us, the bottom line is that we improved. We made some good progress and that's important," DeAnda said.

In the Can Am Open on Sunday, the Jimmies ended with eight place winners. Due to injuries and other factors, DeAnda featured a handful of different wrestlers from Saturday night.

[Women's Wrestling] Jimmies Open with Duals, Tourney

Jamestown College will host the Can Am Duals and Can Am Open this weekend at the Larson Center this weekend.

It's the second straight weekend of competition for the Jimmie women's wrestling team.

Some of the top teams in the country will compete, including national heavyweight Oklahoma City University.

Other teams in attendance include Lindenwood (Mo.) University, Midland (Neb.) University, Missouri Valley College and Waldorf (Iowa) College.

Jimmie women's wrestling coach Tony DeAnda expects between 80 and 100 wrestlers to compete.

The Can Am Duals begin today at 5 p.m. The Can Am Open kicks off Sunday at 9 a.m. Both days will be held at the Larson Center.
