[Jamestown College] Spring Sports and Football Fight Weather

There will be no spring football for the Jimmies this year.

The reason? There has been no spring.

With the school year winding down, and the winter weather refusing to wrap up, Jamestown College head football coach Shawn Frank was forced to pull the plug on Friday.

"Certainly, it was not the decision I wanted to make, or one that was made lightly, but really, Mother Nature kind of made this one for us," he said. "There are logistical hurdles that unfortunately we can't overcome: lack of location to practice; safety issues; the extended forecast; the fact that our kids will be coming up on finals in a couple of weeks.

"Unfortunately, the deck is severely stacked against us on this one."

Frank said there are other things the team will do instead of going outside. He said it was tough to get too worked up when he sees his fellow coaches at JC, who coach spring sports, losing a daily battle with the elements.

"What those coaches are going through is just incredible, it's not fair," Frank said. "They can't catch a break and we feel for them."

Frank said his team will spend additional time in the classroom watching video. They'll also keep grinding away in the weight room.

"We're going to stay busy. We'll do a lot of mental reps and hone in on that end of it," Frank said. "All you can do is make the best of it and that's what we intend to do."

The second-year head coach expects upwards of 30 players to stick around town for the summer.

"We've talked a lot about that. If we're going to be successful we have to work together, train together, bleed together," Frank said. "We have a lot of guys that are committed to that cause and we want to carry that over into the summer."

[Jamestown College] Jimmies Battle Weather in all Sports

Another week, another round of weather-related cancelations and postponements for Jamestown College.

The Jimmie baseball team had their games Tuesday (Dakota Wesleyan) and Wednesday (Minot State) wiped out. The Jimmies, who have won 10 of their last 11 games, hope to play Mayville State (24-2-1) this weekend. Where that happens remains up in the air. It won't be in Jamestown or Mayville. Tom Hager and Scott Berry are working to find a diamond not covered in snow.

When the Jimmies play at home is completely up in the air. Snow remains at Jack Brown Stadium. The 10-day forecast provides little hope with temperatures generally hovering just over freezing and additional snow or rain a decent possibility.

Despite only playing on the road, the Jimmies have made strides. Their team batting average is up to .316 with leadoff man Nolan Skowronek hitting a blistering .460. The junior from Gilbert, Ariz., also owns an on-base average of .510. West Fargo's Spencer Flaten is just a shade under .400 at .391.

[Jamestown College] National Basketball Brackets Announced

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - (Bracket) The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) has officially released the bracket for the 22nd annual State Farm-NAIA Division II Women's Basketball National Championship. The 32-team, single elimination format will take place from March 6 - 12 in Sioux City, Iowa, at the Tyson Event Center.

The championship kicks off at 8:30 a.m. CST on the first three days of competition, with eight games scheduled each day. Quarterfinal action tips off at 1 p.m. on March 9 with the semifinals slated for March 11 at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. The championship final, which will be televised live on CBS Sports Network, will start at 6 p.m. on March 12.

NeuLion, the NAIA's official video streaming company of 12 select NAIA National Championship events, will be broadcasting the first 30 games from Sioux City, Iowa. [Jamestown College] Hoge and Steele Win A.I.I. Athlete of the Week

Jamestown's Steele, Hoge earn A.I.I. weekly honors

Shining on the basketball court, Jamestown College's Hannah Steele and Mark Hoge have earned top honors in the Association of Independent Institutions this week as Steele has been named Female Athlete of the Week, while Hoge has been named the Male Athlete of the Week for the week of Feb. 18-24.

Steele, a 5-foot-4 junior guard from Circle Pines, Minn., was named the Most Outstanding Player at the A.I.I. Women's Division II Basketball Conference Championships after leading the top-seeded Jimmies to the title. She finished with 27 points, eight assists, seven rebounds and two steals, while hitting five 3-pointers in wins over Ashford and Valley City State.

Hoge, a 6-3 junior guard from Ironton, Minn., also was named the Most Outstanding Player at the A.I.I. Men's Division II Basketball Conference Championships. While the Jimmies came up short in a two-point loss in the championship game to Dakota State, Hoge averaged 26.3 points while shooting 53.3 percent (24 for 45) from the field. He was 11-of-19 from 3-point range and 20-for-25 from the free throw line, while grabbing 13 rebounds and handing out 10 assists in three games that also included wins over Ashford and Rochester.

[Jamestown College] Family Fun Night at Feb. 6 Jimmie games

The Jamestown College Jimmie Booster Club is hosting Family Fun Night during the Jimmie women's and men's basketball games vs. Valley City State on Wednesday, Feb. 6 at the Jamestown Civic Center. Game times are 5:30 p.m. for the women and 7:30 p.m. for the men.

Students will be admitted to the games at no charge, receive a free meal and have the opportunity to play games, take pictures and collect autographs from Jimmie student-athletes. The men's basketball team will sign autographs at halftime of the women's game, and the women's team will sign autographs at halftime of the men's game.

Jimmie Janes and student-athletes will host carnival games during halftime of both games, as well as between games.

"This event is a great opportunity to build relationships with the youth and their families," said Dustin Jensen, Executive Director of the Jimmie Booster Club. "It gives us an opportunity to unite Jamestown College and our surrounding community."

Jamestown College men's and women's basketball teams and their coaching staffs are participating in the National Association of Basketball Coaches' Coaches vs. Cancer Suits and Sneakers Challenge benefiting the American Cancer Society. Watch for the coaches wearing sneakers with their suits at the games vs. Oglala Lakota College at 2 and 4 p.m. Sunday at the Jamestown Civic Center. Fans are encouraged to wear the same and to text "Coach" to 20222 to donate $5 to the American Cancer Society.

"This is a great cause and we feel fortunate to be taking part in this event," said head women's coach Greg Ulland. "As coaches, we are so blessed to be able to do something we love and be able to give back to those in need. Everyone knows someone who has been affected by cancer, and we are willing to help bring awareness in any way we can. We encourage everyone to come and support this great event and if you can't make it, text a donation. Every little bit helps!"

[Jamestown College] Dakota Tip Off Classic in Jamestown

The Dakota Tip Off Classic in Jamestown will feature some top quality basketball games this weekend. There will be eight total games in two days at the Civic Center. The tournament will conclude with the women's championship at 5 PM on Sunday and the men's championship at 7 PM.

On the women's side, Valley City State comes in as the top ranked team. The Vikings were ranked 13^th in the latest January 15^th NAIA poll. The host Jimmies are ranked 17^th, while the Comets come in at 27^th.

On the men's side of the bracket, the Vikings again are the top-ranked team entering the tournament. VCSU was ranked 20^th in the latest January 15^th NAIA poll, while Dakota State is ranked 33^rd.

[Jamestown College] Two Jimmie Graduates into NDSHCA HOF

Jamestown College graduates Dan Imdieke and Jim Haussler will be inducted into the North Dakota High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame, announced on Wednesday.

Imdieke and Haussler join Bismarck High School co-wrestling coach Scott Knowlen and longtime Killdeer track and field coach Jim Jeske as this year's inductees. They will be recognized at the coaches convention July 25 in Mandan.

Imdieke, a graduate of Sauk Center High School (Minn.) has been teaching and coaching in Linton for the last 37 years, also serving as athletic director for 25 years. He's coached football for 36 years and wrestling for 37.

He's led the Lions to 19 region titles and 12 state championship appearances, winning titles in 1980, 1990, 2000, 2002 and 2003. He's been region coach of the year 10 times and region athletic director of the year three times.

Imdieke was nominated by NDHSCA past president Pete Moe of Washburn.

Imdieke is a 1976 graduate of Jamestown College. He was involved in football and wrestling as a Jimmie and won the 1999 Rollie Greeno Award.

Haussler has been the athletic director for Bismarck Public Schools since 1992. He has managed approximately 200 NDHSAA regional and state events. His career started as boys track and field and boys basketball coach at Finley-Sharon High School in 1978. He was assistant principal at Bismarck and Century before taking his current post.

[Jamestown College] Jimmies Earn Champions of Character Again

The Jamestown College Athletic Department has been recognized for the 2011-2012 school year with the Five Star Champions of Character Institution Award. This is the fourth consecutive year that JC has received this recognition.

The NAIA Champions of Character program is designed to instill an understanding of character values in sport and provide practical tools for student athletes, coaches and parents to use in modeling exemplary character traits through the five core character values of Respect, Responsibility, Integrity, Sportsmanship, and Servant Leadership.

To earn the Institution Award, each school must earn points in several key areas, including Character training and community outreach programs, conduct in competition, academic success, and character recognition.

JC athletes participated in numerous community outreach programs during the year, including coaching several Special Olympics teams, working with various food drives for the local food pantry, reading programs and visits to the local elementary schools and the Anne Carlson Center, and helping with a variety of youth sports camps and activities.

Kathryn Lemm, program coordinator states "The Champions of Character program fits in well with JC's overall Character program (the Journey). Our student-athletes do a variety of community activities. I believe that these experiences help them grow and mature into future community leaders."

[Jamestown College] Ramlo Wins A.I.I. Female Athlete Award

Amber Ramlo has been named the Association of Independent Institution's Female Athlete of the Week.

Ramlo, a senior on the Jimmie women's basketball team, had 33 rebounds, 16 points, eight blocked shots, five teams and four assists in helping 11th-ranked Jamestown College to a 2-0 start to the season.

Ramlo, from Jamestown, had 10 points and 19 rebounds in the Jimmies' win over Brandon, Manitoba on Friday night. She is the sixth JC athlete to win the award so far this season.

Jamestown College has back-to-back games in Iowa this weekend, beginning Friday against Dordt and Saturday against No. 2-ranked and three-time defending NAIA national champion Northwestern on Saturday.

[Jamestown College] Jimmies Ranked in a Variety of Sports

The Jamestown College men's soccer team is ranked No. 38 in the NAIA's Modified Ratings Percentage Index.

The Jimmies (13-3) have essentially secured a spot in the A.I.I./Unaffiliated Tournament next month in San Marcos, California.

The MRPI will select the at-large qualifying teams and seed the 32-team national championship field.

The Jimmies have two golden chances to move up this weekend. They take on No. 36 Great Falls on Saturday and No. 26 Rocky Mountain on Sunday.

The Jimmies just lost to the No. 14 teams in the poll, Ashford, Iowa, but they led 1-0 late in that match.

The Jimmie women (8-6-2) also have locked up a spot in the Unaffiliated tournament. They too play Great Falls and Rocky Mountain this weekend.

The Jamestown College volleyball team is up in the latest NAIA top 25.

The Jimmies (21-6) tied for the fourth-most votes of teams not in the top 25, meaning they were tied for 29th with Southern Oregon.

[Jamestown College] Jimmie Basketball is a Favorite Time

One of my favorite times of the sports year is about to arrive. I'm talking about Jimmie basketball, of course.

I know, due to a quirk in the schedule, the men have played and won a pair already. But come the end of October and early November, things will really start to get interesting.

The women get started Friday and Saturday at home, then both the men and women will head down to Iowa in early November for a challenging pair of road games against Dordt and Northwestern. Let me just say right here that if you're one of those folks that haven't ventured out to the Civic Center for a Jimmie hoop doubleheader, you really need to check it out. Jimmie basketball at the Civic Center is pretty much a guaranteed good time. The tickets and food are reasonably priced, the basketball is always exciting, and quite frankly, you won't find a better bunch of people to spend a few hours with.

Unlike the cozy gyms where many small colleges play, the Civic Center is a big building. It takes a good number of folks to get the place rocking. It's up to us to get out there, support our local college and the student athletes that represent Jamestown.

When we take a look at the men's side, change is the word that best describes the off season. The men are coming off a 25-7 season, finishing 11th in the final NAIA Division II national poll. A last second, heartbreaking loss in the first round of the national tournament ended the season. With all five starters from last year's team gone, it seemed possible that we might be staring a rebuilding year right in the face.

Rollie Greeno Award recipients Phil Martin and Joel Zenker, along with Athletic Hall of Fame inductees John Backhaus, Shawna Doty-Myers, Erin (Boziel) Josing and the 1993-94 Jimmie men's basketball team will be recognized at the Jimmie Booster Club's Athletic Hall of Fame Breakfast at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 13 during Jamestown College Homecoming festivities.

Phil Martin (Class of 1968), of West Fargo, N.D., retired in 2009 after 41 years at Lisbon High School, where he held positions as a teacher, guidance counselor, principal and coach. He earned his M.Ed. in guidance and counseling at North Dakota State University and did extensive postgraduate coursework in secondary administration through the Tri-College system. He held various coaching positions in football, basketball, track and cross country. As head boys' and girls' cross country coach for 18 years, Martin coached 69 All-Region and 30 All-State runners. He served on the North Dakota State Advisory Committee as the East Region Cross Country representative. He was recognized as the East Region Cross Country Coach of the Year numerous times and was named North Dakota Class B Boys Coach of the Year in 1999. Martin is a lifetime member of NDHSCA and has continued his support of student athletics by serving on the working staff at state cross country and track and field meets.
