[Softball] Six Jimmies Honored for All-Conference

Six Jamestown College Jimmies were announced as All-Conference for the A.I.I./Frontier Softball 2013 season.

Jimmies honored are as follows:

Kristi Michaud (Sr. Victoria, BC, Canada)
Janelle Spear (Sr. Spokane, WA)
Sarah Heinemann (Sr. North Battleford, SK, Canada)
Courtney Van Den Bussche (Jr. Portage La Prairie, MB, Canada)
Rachel Ivelia (Sr. Snohomish, WA)
Kate Johnson (Sr. Victoria, BC, Canada)

Kate Johnson was also honored as the senior of the year.

Emily Snow didn't need much help on Friday, but she received plenty of anyways.

The Jamestown College junior from Rio Linda, Calif., twirled a two-hitter as the Jimmies advanced at the Unaffiliated Conference Tournament with an 8-0 win in six innings against the University of Great Falls on Friday in Dickinson.

Snow's line was impressive, as she didn't walk a batter and finished with four strikeouts.

"She couldn't get much better," JC coach Kevin Gall said. "She was around the plate. Four or five times she had a full count and she needed to make a pitch, and she made a pitch. It couldn't have gone any better, really."

The Jamestown College softball team hit the 20-win plateau at Mayville State on Tuesday, but the three-win Comets made the Jimmies earn it.

The Orange and Black needed to rally for four runs in the top of the seventh inning to defeat the Comets 7-6 in the opener. But it was all Jimmies in a 14-0 blowout in the nightcap, which moved JC to 20-11 overall on the season.

"All year long we've kind of won the games we're supposed to win. Today ended up being no different, but at the same time Mayville totally outplayed us in the first game," JC head softball coach Kevin Gall said. "You could certainly say that they deserved to win the first game. We didn't make them that uncomfortable in the batter's box and they just did a good job of hitting the ball."

The Comets outhit the Jimmies 13 to nine in the opener, and chased Jamestown College starting pitcher DJ Johnson off the mound in the sixth inning after building a 6-3 lead.

The seventh-inning rally by the Jimmies started with an RBI groundout by Rachel Ivelia and an RBI double by Kate Johnson. Jimmie senior Sarah Heinemann then provided the big blow with a 2-RBI home run.

Here Saturday and South Dakota Sunday, it was a dominant weekend for the Jamestown College softball team.

The Jimmies went 4-0 against Valley City State and Dakota State, scoring 44 runs and allowing only eight to improve their record to 18-11. They've won eight of their last nine overall.

"We did a lot of good things," JC coach Kevin Gall said. "We can still play better as a team, but we showed we can be a pretty good team."

The Jimmies averaged nearly 12 hits per contest and only half of the games went the distance.

D.J. Johnson and Emily Snow were each 2-0 in the circle.

"They were able to keep the other teams off balance," Gall said. "It helps when you got runs to work with and we swung the bats pretty well."

The Jimmies close out the regular season on Tuesday in Mayville against the Comets. The A.I.I. conference tournament begins Friday in Dickinson.

[Softball] Jimmie Softball Wins Two in Montana

The Jimmie women's bats were banging in Montana on Friday.

Following 12 days away from the diamond, the Jimmie softball team apparently kept their sticks insulated from the rash of cold weather locally, rifling off 32 hits and scoring 24 runs in a pair of victories in Great Falls.

A 12-run bottom of the third by Jamestown College torpedoed Mayville State University's chances, as the Jimmies sunk the Comets 16-6 in five innings. After that, the Jimmies hung five runs on the scoreboard in the top of the eighth to defeat the University of Great Falls 8-3 in extra frames.

Notable performances for the Jimmies on the day were aplenty. Slugging senior Kate Johnson belted a homer in each game, going 3-for-7 with four RBIs and two runs scored in the pair of contests.

Senior Sarah Heinemann also homered in both games for Jamestown College, as she went 4-for-7 with four RBIs and four runs scored. Johnson is batting a team-leading .456 with five homers and 19 RBIs this season, while Heinemann improved to .385 with four home runs and a team-leading 20 RBIs.

Senior outfielder Allison Roper (.344, 17 RBIs) went 6-for-9 at the plate in the two games with a pair of doubles, five RBIs and three runs scored. The Jimmies' Kelsie DeBroeck (5), Celene Eccles (4) and Courtney Van Den Bussche (4) each collected four or more hits on the day.

What's one of the perks of playing softball in and around the frozen tundra that is North Dakota?

Well, if one's a member of the Jamestown College Jimmies it would have to be packing a few bags and hopping a flight to sun-drenched Arizona for a week in March.

This year's flight departs on Sunday, as the Jimmies kick off their 2013 campaign with an even dozen contests at the annual Tucson Invitational Games.

The invitational gets underway for the Jimmies at 1:30 p.m. on Monday against Mount Marty College, and will wrap up with a doubleheader vs. Cal State San Marcos on March 17.

Jamestown College enjoyed plenty of success one year ago, producing the program's first conference championship since 1992 and finishing with an overall record of 28-23. The season came to a close with a pair of losses at the A.I.I. Tournament in Columbus, Georgia last May, which is where Jimmies head coach Kevin Gall said he would like to see his club return.

[Softball] Jimmie Softball Improves Playground

The Jamestown College softball team voluntarily worked diligently to help improve life for children on Sunday, October 7, 2012.

Twenty-Five Jimmie softball players worked for three hours in the early Sunday hours to make the YMCA learning center playground safer. Weeds were pulled, sand was tilled, holes were filled, and a little corner of the world was made a little more beautiful.

Melissa Stoudt, YMCA learning center director, said, "The playground looks amazing. It was very much appreciated."

Along with thanking his Jimmie softball players, Coach Kevin Gall shouted out appreciation for the Jamestown Parks and Recreation for loaning out a tractor and a tiller for the project.

Coach Gall said, "This was something that needed to be done. Kids will appreciate it and have a bigger sand box."

Children were witnessed making sand angels on Monday.
