[Baseball] Jimmies Prospects Bright for 2013

The final pieces to the NAIA World Series puzzle were filled on Monday.

With the roster the Jimmies have returning next season, they hope to make a run at returning to Lewiston, Idaho.

Jamestown College (32-16-1) fell short of qualifying for the NAIA national tournament this season, but with a bumper crop of returnees coming back, coach Tom Hager expects his team to be in the mix.

"We feel like we have some very talented players offensively, and on the mound the future looks bright," Hager said. "We have a very good junior class and we're looking forward to working with them next year."

Next year's team will be led by that group of seniors-to-be, particularly on the mound.

The five pitchers with the five lowest ERAs on the staff all return next season, and all logged nearly 30 innings or more.

"We have a lot of guys that threw a lot of innings coming back. We feel like that will be a really strong starting point for our team next season," Hager said.

Moorhead's Paul Roers (3-3, 3.09 ERA, 55 1/3 IP) and Adam Ranger (5-0, 3.47 ERA, 46 2/3) are steady innings-eaters. Kacy Gardiner could be an ace. After a shoulder ailment kept him sidelined early, he returned and allowed just 23 hits in 28 1/3 IP with 26 strikeouts in the second half. He posted a sparkling 2.86 ERA and was 3-1 overall.

[Women's Track & Field] Nichole Johansen signs with Jamestown College

Jamestown College women's track & field coach, Jim Clark, announced that Nichole Johansen, who graduated from Devils Lake High School in 2010 and Lake Region Community College in 2012, signed a letter of intent to enroll at Jamestown College. Nichole plans to participate in track & field for the Jimmies.

Nichole's parents are Colleen and Kelly Johansen of Devils Lake. Nichole plans to major in Nursing at Jamestown College.

Coach Clark said, "Nichole is a very good student and Jamestown College should be a nice fit as she pursues the goal of becoming a Registered Nurse. Nichole has not competed in track for the past two years as she completed her college work at Lake Region, but has kept in touch by helping coach the high school vaulters in Devils Lake and she has a good understanding of the event. Nichole established a quick rapport with Jimmie vaulting coach Andrew Gideon when she worked out with the team and that should also be a good fit. Nichole is a nice person and a welcome addition to Jimmie track & field. It will be fun to see what she can accomplish in the upcoming years."

[Volleyball] Allison Barta signs with Jamestown College

Jamestown College head volleyball coach Jon Hegerle announced that Allison Barta of West Fargo signed a Letter of Intent to enroll at Jamestown College next year and play volleyball for the Jimmies. She will graduate this spring from West Fargo High School.

Barta is an All-Conference, All-State and All-Tournament selection for the Packers. Coach Hegerle stated that her athleticism, skill set, and competitiveness will be a great addition to Jimmie volleyball.

"Allison's development in the West Fargo volleyball program has prepared her well for competing at the collegiate level," Hegerle said. "In working with Allison at a number of camps last summer and watching her compete her senior year, it quickly became apparent that we wanted her to become a Jimmie. Allison truly has the tools to be an impact player in our league, and I am looking forward to helping her reach her potential at Jamestown College."

Barta plans to major in Nursing at Jamestown College. She is the daughter of Chris and Hope Barta and Wendy Barta.

[Women's Track & Field] JC Grads have continued Success

Katie Conlon's track and field career is continuing at one of the premier schools in the country.

Conlon, an 11-time All-American at Jamestown College, competed in her first meet for the University of Oregon on May 5. Conlon, a Jamestown native, placed second in the 3,000 meter run at the Oregon Twilight Meet in Eugene.

Her time of 9:42.24 was a career best by nearly nine seconds and good for a second-place finish.

The race was the first for Conlon since she won the NAIA 3000 meter steeplechase at the national meet last May in Marion, Ind.

Conlon officially graduated from Jamestown College (in absentia) last Saturday and now is enrolled in a master's program at Oregon. She has two seasons remaining in outdoor track for the Ducks and one in cross country and indoor track.

Her effort in the 3,000 last Saturday put her in contention to be on Oregon's team for this weekend's PAC-12 conference meet, but she was not chosen.

Conlon holds Jamestown College school records in the 5,000 meters (17:32.28), indoor mile (4:59.94), 3,000 (9:51.36), steeplechase and the distance medley (12:04.88). She also was part of the 4 x 800 record at Jamestown (9:17.16).

At the same meet where Conlon made her debut for Oregon, another Jimmie alum, Sarah Skipper, also competed, placing fourth in the 400 hurdles (1:04.16).

[Track & Field] Two more Jimmies qualify for Nationals

Kayla Roemmich and Beth Segerholm used the final meet of the year to keep their seasons alive.

Both Jamestown College junior throwers hit the NAIA National qualifying mark at the regular-season ending Blue Hawk Open in Dickinson on Thursday.

Roemmich, who has been stellar in the discus and shot put all season, surpassed the qualifying standard by 3 inches with a discus spin of 139 feet, five inches.

"She missed it by three inches last week and made it by three inches this week. She deserved it. She's had a very good year," JC women's coach Jim Clark said.

Segerholm earned a trip to nationals in the javelin for the third straight year with a throw of 129-8.

"She's good when the pressure's on," Clark said.

Overall, both JC teams placed second on the day.

Dakota Athletic Conference championships were also awarded to the top finishers from the DAC.

The women had eight in all with Roemmich and freshman Taylor Miller earning doubles.

Miller, a freshman from Mandan, capped her fine collegiate debut campaign with a sweep of the 100 and 200.

[Baseball] Jimmies Earn Post-Season Honors

The Dakota Athletic Conference (DAC) and the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) announced the post-season awards.

The Jamestown College baseball team earned seventeen DAC awards. The Jimmies had each class represented, as well as the coach of the year, Tom Hager.

The first team All-DAC awards for Jamestown were Derek Wallace (Sr, IF), Nico Moreno (Jr, IF), Max Boe (Sr, OF), Joe Perez (Sr, C), Adam Ranger (Jr, P), and Blake Stewart (So, P).

The second team All-DAC awards for Jamestown were Matthew Achter (Fr, OF), Paul Roers (Jr, P), Nick Smart (So, P), and Mitch Stevens (So, DH).

The Gold Glove team included Jimmies Derek Wallace (1B), Nico Moreno (3B), Rudy Strnad (So, SS), Max Boe (OF), and Joe Perez (C).

Max Boe earned his third DAC award as the Most Valuable Senior.

Tom Hager was the Coach of the Year.

The Jimmies honored were from seven states and Canada.

[Softball] DAC Conference Awards for Jimmie Softball

The Jamestown College softball team cleaned up in the final Dakota Athletic Conference season-ending awards.

Junior first baseman Kate Johnson was named Player of the Year and voted all-conference. Johnson hit .378 with 10 home runs and 59 RBIs. She also had a 22-game hitting streak earlier in the season (a school record). Johnson's second school record set was an 8 RBI game at the University of Great Falls.

Centerfielder Heather Haegele was named Senior of the Year and named all-DAC. She leads the Jimmies with a .439 avg. Haegele had an 18 game hitting streak during the season.

D.J. Johnson was named Pitcher of the Year and all-league after going 13-4 with a 3.58 ERA.

Other all-conference members are outfielder Erica Rush and third baseman Kelsie Jensen.

Kevin Gall was named Coach of the Year.

The Jimmies finished 28-23, winning nine more games in 2012 than the team did in 2011.

[Women's Soccer] Keela Burt signs with Jamestown College

Jamestown College head women's soccer coach Phillip Bohn announced the signing of Keela Burt (Mandan, ND) for the 2012 school year.

Burt, a senior midfielder at Mandan High School, has been a five-year letter winner. She has served as team captain for the past two years, earning Second-Team All-Conference in 2010-11.

Burt plays her club soccer for Dakota United in Bismarck.

"We are very excited that Keela has decided to join us at Jamestown College," Bohn said. "She has the ability to be a very successful winger-type player at the college level. Her drive and determination to succeed is evident in how she plays, and I am really excited to get to work with her starting in the fall."

In addition to soccer, Burt has been a member of basketball, honor society, and student council. She has been an honor roll student all four years of high school, including earning Academic All Conference 2010-11.

At Jamestown College, she plans to study biology.

She is the daughter of Kasey and Carrie Burt.

[Women's Cross Country] "Biz" Entzel signs with Jamestown College

Jamestown College women's track & field and cross country coach, Jim Clark, announced that Elizabeth Entzel, a 2012 graduate of Jamestown High School, signed with Jamestown College and plans to participate in Cross Country for the Jimmies.

Biz is the daughter of Barb and Allen Entzel of Jamestown. Biz plans to study Exercise Science.

Coach Clark said, "I think Biz gets her nickname as much from how busy she has been with activities at JHS as from a reconfiguration of her first name. Biz is an outstanding student and plans to participate in the Choir at Jamestown College in addition to Cross Country. Anyone who has met Biz knows what a warm and friendly �people person' she is. She will be a wonderful addition to our college and to our Cross Country team. The whole Entzel family has been a big part of Blue Jay Cross Country for many years and hopefully that tradition can continue at Jamestown College."

[Men's Wrestling] Edward Wilson signs with Jamestown College

Jamestown College head men's wrestling coach C.J. Campbell announced that Edward Wilson of Spring, Texas, signed a letter of intent to enroll at Jamestown College next year to wrestle for the Jimmies.

Wilson is a regional finalist and state qualifier at 120 pounds for Klein High School, where he graduates this spring with a 3.42 GPA. He was a 2010 All-American and holds his school records for takedowns and wins.

"We are happy to have signed such a bright student and accomplished wrestler as Eddie," Campbell said. "He will add much needed depth to our 125-pound weight class next year and will be among a strong core group of wrestlers who will help push each other to the next level."

[Women's Basketball] Chelsey Frydenlund signs with Jamestown College

Jamestown College head women's basketball coach Greg Ulland announced that Chelsey Frydenlund of East Grand Forks, Minnesota, signed a Letter of Intent to enroll at Jamestown College next year and play basketball for the Jimmies.

Frydenlund, a five-foot-nine guard, was a three-time All-State and four-time All-Conference selection and is East Grand Forks Senior High's all-time leader in points, assists, and steals. She is also a three-time All-Conference selection in volleyball and school record holder in the long jump and as part of the 4x400 relay team.

"I have known Chels for a long time and am elated to get the opportunity to coach her for the next four years," Ulland said. "She is an amazing addition and great fit into the Jimmie family, and I'm so happy she wants to continue her playing at Jamestown College.

"Chelsey has played a lot of basketball at a high level: Division I at UND, North Tartan - the best AAU program in the country during her offseason - along with a very successful high school career," he continued. "Being a coach's daughter, she is very coachable, understands the game and has a great basketball IQ. She works hard and strives for perfection - both qualities we promote and exemplify within the program."

[Track & Field] Jimmies find Gem in Warnes

Jolynn Warnes did not have plans of becoming the latest successful multi-event performer for the Jimmie women's track team when she arrived on campus last fall.

Plans do change, however.

Warnes, a freshman, only competed in the hurdles and jumps in high school, but has spread her wings at Jamestown College.

In short order Warnes has become formidable enough in all seven events - 200 meters, 100 hurdles, high jump, shot put, long jump, javelin and 800 - to where last week she provisionally qualified for the NAIA National championships.

Warnes, a native of Kensington, Minn., a town of less than 300 people in lakes country, has taken to the heptathlon quickly and her upside appears high.

"It's pretty exciting," she said. "I was surprised when coach (Jim) Clark let me do it, but I'm trying to do my best."

Warnes' top total of 3,764 points ranks her in the top 35 in the NAIA. Only the best 16 scores will go to Marian, Ind., later this month for nationals.

The last handful of years, the Jimmies had one of the top multi-eventers in the NAIA in Sarah Skipper. Filling those athletic shoes is a tall task for anybody, but Warnes, and sophomore Casey Geffre, have both shown plenty of promise.

"I'm trying to learn as much as I can from the coaches. I think it's going pretty good, but I still have a lot to learn," she said. "But it's fun."

[Track & Field] Another Standout Performance by a Roemmich

Another meet, another standout performance by Kayla Roemmich.

The Jamestown College junior spun another personal best in the discus on Saturday at the Ron Masanz Invite at MSU-Moorhead.

Roemmich crept ever closer to qualifying for nationals with her 138-foot, 9-inch effort, just three inches off the standard.

"Hopefully I can do it," she said. "It's kind of a mind game with yourself. I feel like I'm improving, so you just go out there and do the best you can."

Roemmich has no competition within the team. In practice, she measures herself against some of the JC men.

"It works out pretty good doing that. I try to hang in there with them the best I can," she said.

"Kayla is throwing the disc so well, but just needs to get over a small hump to get qualified," JC women's coach Jim Clark said. "Hopefully the Dickinson meet on Thursday will be the one."

Roemmich was also fourth in the shot put against another strong field of NCAA Division I and II teams.

[Women's Track & Field] Warnes Wins Jamestown College Heptathlon

Jolynn Warnes held off Lisa Oliveras to win the Jamestown College Heptathlon on Friday.

Warnes, a freshman from Kensington, Minn., won the long jump (16-feet, 4 1/2 inches) and 800 meters (2:40.90) to give her a total of 3,764 points over the two-day event.

Oliveras, who took the javelin Friday, totaled 3,694.

"Jolynn had a good second day. She had a bit of a sore arm that may have hampered her in the javelin, but she did OK there too," said JC women's track and field coach Jim Clark.

Casey Geffre, the sophomore from Hankinson, was supposed to have joined Warnes and Oliveras, but a knee injury Thursday forced her to pull out.

"I think Casey's injury in the first event took some of the edge off Jolynn's energy level, but she stayed in there and competed well today," Clark said.

The Jimmies compete in the Ron Masanz Invite at MSU-Moorhead today.

[Softball] Kelsie DeBroeck 3 hits in Final 2012 Jimmie Game

Before the Jimmie softball team even went to the plate, it found itself in a big hole.

Thomas University (Ga.) dumped four runs on Jamestown College starter D.J. Johnson in the top of the first inning and the Night Hawks added two more in the fourth to take a six-run lead en route to an 8-3 victory at the A.I.I tournament Friday in Thomas, Ga.

The loss to the host team ends the Jimmies' season at 28-23 after falling in five of their last seven games.

JC, which dropped into loser-out action after a loss to Dickinson State on Thursday, responded with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. However, Thomas came back with a run in each of the fifth and seventh innings to round out the final score.

Kelsie DeBroeck led JC at the plate, finishing 3-for-3, and Kelsie Jensen added a 2-for-4 performance, as the Jimmies outhit Thomas 8-6 despite the loss.
