[Men's Soccer] Sean Peters and Clarke Wintle Sign with Jimmies

Jamestown College head men's soccer coach Phillip Bohn announced the signing of Sean Peters (Kalispell, MT) and Clarke Wintle (Huron, SD) for the 2012 season.

Peters, a goalkeeper from Glacier High School, was a three-year letterman, helping guide his team to a fifth place finish at the state tournament this fall. As a senior he earned All State honors along with being named the team's defensive player of the year. Peters plays his club soccer for Flathead Force.

Wintle, a striker from Huron High School, was a four-year letterman, earning First Team All State honors as a junior and senior. He was also voted Most Valuable Offensive Player both years. As a senior he was named Team Most Valuable Player. Wintle plays his club soccer for South Dakota United. In 2010, he helped guide his team to the state championship.

"We are very excited that both these young men have decided to become Jimmies," said Jamestown head coach Phillip Bohn. "We believe that both Sean and Clarke will have a very positive impact on our program both on and off the field. I'm looking forward to this fall to get started working with them on a daily basis."

[Women's Basketball] Jimmies Preserve 49-47 Win over Vikings

When the Jimmie and Viking women play, the first 39 minutes are almost irrelevant.

No matter the records or rankings of the two teams, the game is going to the wire.

It did again Wednesday night and for the second time in 10 days Jamestown College survived.

Kellie Schuneman made 1 of 2 free throws with 5 seconds left. The Vikings, who led by four midway through the second half, had one last chance, but turned it over as time expired, preserving a 49-47 JC win.

"It doesn't matter if its one point, two points, or 20 points at this point," JC coach Greg Ulland said. "As long as we have one more when the buzzer sounds, we're good."

It won't go down as the prettiest of their 22 wins, but that's OK.

"They're a good defensive team. They execute well," Ulland said of the Vikings. "Clearly, we do have to shoot the ball better. 0-for-10 (on three-pointers) in the second half is unacceptable. Somehow we were able to survive it."

Both teams rank in the top 20 in the NAIA in defense and it showed.

The 11th-ranked Jimmies (22-3) missed 31 shots and made 15. They also missed 10 free throws.

[Men's Basketball] Jimmies Down 19, Force Overtime

The Jimmies dug a deep hole, nearly climbed out before Valley City State's star freshman nailed the dagger.

Down 19 points with 13 minutes to play, seventh-ranked Jamestown College came all the way back to force overtime. But lightning-quick freshman point guard A.J. McDonald buried a long three-pointer at the buzzer to give the Vikings a well-earned 86-83 win in a classic between the longtime rivals at raucous Jamestown Civic Center.

"It was a good college basketball game between two top 20 teams," JC coach Matt Murken said. "Both teams made a lot of good basketball plays, they just made one more than we did."

The Vikings (19-6) came into the game ranked 17th and certainly have the firepower of an elite NAIA team.

They built a 56-37 lead on one of the best defensive teams in the NAIA.

"We know how good of a team Jamestown College is, they're one of the best teams in the country," said VCSU coach Jeff Kaminsky. "When you play a team like that, you're never comfortable, no matter how big your lead is. Tonight was a perfect example of that."

B.J. Mertens proved his "Big Shot" nickname spot on with a clutch three-pointer that knotted the game at 72-all with 17 seconds to go. The Jimmies needed a defensive stop though to play on and got it from versatile 6-foot-3 defender Mark Hoge, who blocked McDonald's game-winning attempt in regulation.

[Football] Belmore Hired as Offensive Coordinator

It was going to take a good job to get Tim Belmore to leave Grand Forks.

He found it at Jamestown College.

Belmore, who had been an assistant coach at UND for the past 12 years, was hired to take over the offense for the Jamestown College football team under new head coach Shawn Frank, who was hired last month to replace Bud Etzold, who resigned in December.

Belmore, who was the wide receivers coach, recruiting coordinator and camp coordinator at North Dakota, said becoming the Jimmies' offensive coordinator was an easy decision.

"There's no question leaving a place like UND is tough, but it just speaks to the incredible opportunity I have here at Jamestown College. Really, I couldn't be more excited to join coach Frank's staff and come to work at a place like Jamestown College," said Belmore, a native of Bloomington, Minn. "It's been a dream of mine to become a coordinator, to test my skills and most importantly grow as a coach and as a person. To get that opportunity at a place like Jamestown College, with the tradition and history it has, is very exciting."

Belmore, who played and coached at Gustavus Adolphus College, had no hesitation about coming to Jamestown. He got glowing recommendations from former JC head football coach Tom Dosch - who he coached and roomed with in Grand Forks when both were on staff there - JC alum Bubba Schweigert, another former UND assistant coach and current defensive coordinator at Southern Illinois, and current JC women's basketball coach Greg Ulland, who spent four seasons at UND as an assistant coach.

Jamestown College head football coach Shawn Frank announces 11 student-athletes in the initial 2012 signing class.

"These young men all exemplify what we seek in our players," Frank says. "They are good students who have a passion for being Jimmies. These young men hold our institution in high regard, and it is that characteristic that they identified when making their decisions to enroll at Jamestown College. We look forward to developing these young men into the best players we possibly can."

Frank says the group has a nice balance offensively and defensively.

"We feel, with these young men, that we have a great start to our recruiting class," he says. "We have players who have an opportunity to excel on the football field and in the classroom. They play with passion and enjoy the game.

"We will continue recruiting until we fill the voids that are left," he says. "The exciting thing about this process is we have a number of talented players, in addition to this group, who will be making decisions soon. Moving forward, we will continue to find quality players who fit our profile."

When you carry lofty rankings like the Jimmie basketball teams do, every game is a big one for whomever they're playing.

Valley City State, tonight's opponent, never needs any extra juice to get up for Jamestown College. Still, beating the Jimmies - particularly here - is an attractive pelt to hang on the wall.

"The fact of the matter is when a team is ranked in the top 10 in the country it's always going to be a big game," said JC men's coach Matt Murken, whose team is ranked No. 7 in the NAIA with a 20-4 record. "Every game we play is a big game right now. We know we're going to get a great effort from everybody we play. To our guys' credit we've been able to come out and play well, especially defensively."

January went about perfectly for the Jimmies. They went 7-0 and didn't allow more than 70 points in any of those games. In fact, the Jimmies have the No. 3 defense in the country. They're allowing only 58.5 points per game.

Tonight, both teams finally get to play at home for the first time in a month.

Jamestown College head football coach Shawn Frank announces Christian Henry of Mentone, Ala., Andrew Jochim of Wishek, Michael Knoblauch of Sauk Centre, Minn., and Cole Praus of Breckenridge, Minn., have all signed Letters of Intent to enroll at Jamestown College next year and play football for the Jimmies.

The Jimmies continue to hog all of the weekly DAC awards.

Junior Bridget Schuneman and Travis Burley won the weekly conference basketball awards for the second straight week and third time each.

In fact, one of the Schuneman sisters - Bridget or Kellie - has won the DAC women's player of the week for five straight weeks.

Bridget, a junior post, had 23 points and 6 rebounds in the Jimmies' lone game of the week - their 21st win of the season on Saturday at Mayville State.

Burley had a 20-10 game in the Jimmies' win over the Comets Saturday. He made 9 of his 16 shots in the win for the 20-4 Jimmies. Burley totaled 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.

The new NAIA top 25s were supposed to be released on Monday, but were not posted at press time. The JC women were 12th last week and the men ninth.

The Jimmies play at home for the first time in a month on Wednesday when they host Valley City State.

Aleona Reyes also picked up a weekly award.

[Men's Track & Field] Kamoni Runs to 800 Win Again

Spencer Kamoni, a sophomore from Jamestown on the men's team, accounted for the only win for the Jimmies on Saturday at the Cobber Invite in Moorhead.

Kamoni came into the indoor season in prime shape and has looked it.

He skunked the field Saturday and essentially was running alone in his winning 1:58.51, which was just 1.2 seconds from qualifying for nationals.

"Spencer really committed himself to getting in shape and it's paying off for him," JC men's coach Ed Crawford said. "He keeps getting better and better and I really think he has a chance to qualify for nationals. He's really motivated and it's great to see."

Crawford spoke the same way of Jarann Johnson, who continued his fast start to the season.

The junior from California was second in the 400 (51.048) and sixth in the 200 (23.38) right behind teammate Brent Jansen (23.31), a PR.

"Jarann has really done a nice job for us. He's another kid that's really motivated and you can see that by the way he is running right now."

[Women's Track & Field] Reyes Sets 1000 Forum Record

Aleona Reyes put another notch in her belt on Saturday.

The Jamestown College sophomore standout set a new Olson Forum Fieldhouse record in the 1000, running the race in a time of 2:58.87 to beat Minot State standout Courtney Schall in her first-ever outing in the race. She became just the fifth Jimmie to run the 1000 in less than three minutes.

Reyes also had anchored the Jimmies Distance Medley Relay team, which clipped the NAIA qualifying mark of 12:55.70, in 12:51.31.

"Aleona had an incredible day," said JC women's coach Jim Clark, who also pointed out her career-best 8-9 in the pole vault.

Reyes qualified earlier in the mile.

Madey Hornung, who was second individually in the 800, Stephanie Erlandson, and Mallory Souder rounded out the DMR quartet.

[Women's Wrestling] Fleming Earns All-American Honors

Chelsie Fleming's fast start earned her All-American honors.

Fleming won her first two matches by fall, but then lost three straight, including getting pinned in the fifth-place match.

But the 191-pound sophomore from Fossford, Ohio, pinned her first two opponents in less than three minutes to advance in the winner's bracket at the WCWA National Tournament in Bristol, Tenn.

The top six placers in each weight class earn All-American honors.

Fleming's sixth-place finish helped the Jimmies to an 11th-place finish overall with 3 points in the 15-team meet.

Oklahoma City won the team title with 141 points.

Seven other Jimmies competed in the meet.

Michelle Canete (116), Serrina Smith (136), and Shai Mason (136) each went 2-2 in the meet. Both wins by Smith and Mason were by pin.

Nichole Yarrington (109) went 1-2, while Gabriela Urzola (109), Catherine Kelly (116), and Erie Bragg (170) competed, but were 0-2.

[Women's Basketball] Jimmies Score 101 in DAC Opener

It doesn't matter much who or where the Jimmie basketball teams are playing these days, the end result is pretty much always the same - wins.

That was the case again on Saturday night as both ranked JC squads took the best shot Mayville State had to offer, but it was another Jimmie road sweep as the women won a shootout (101-82), while the men continued to clamp teams down defensively with a sturdy 66-51 triumph in the Dakota Athletic Conference opener for both teams.

At long last, both finally return home Wednesday night in what figures to be a lively doubleheader as Valley City State comes to town.

It's been a bit of a struggle offensively in recent weeks for the Jimmie, but they got it going Saturday when they needed to in securing their fifth straight win.

The 101-point outing featured a 58-point second half as win No. 21 for the 12th-ranked team in the NAIA turned into a bit of a track meet.

Men

Winning on the road in conference play is hard. But so too is doing anything offensively against the ninth-ranked Jimmies.

The JC men improved to 20-4 with another sticky defensive effort, limiting the Comets to just 51 points in 40 minutes.

The Jimmies allowed the Comets (12-10) to make just 17 of their 49 shots and forced 18 turnovers.
