OPTIMIST CLUB ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Optimist International is an association of more than 2,900 Optimist Clubs around the world dedicated to "Bringing Out the Best in Kids." Adult volunteers join Optimist Clubs to conduct positive service projects in their communities aimed at providing a helping hand to youth. With their upbeat attitude, Optimist Club members help empower young people to be the best that they can be.

Beth Segerholm / Junior / Jimmie Women's Track & Field / Northwood, ND

Beth qualified for the NAIA National Outdoor Track & Field Championships for the 3rd straight year with a Javelin throw of 129' 8" for 3rd place in the Blue Hawk Open meet on Thursday.     

Evan Schreiner / Sophomore / Jimmie Track & Field / Wahpeton, ND

Evan was the 3rd place DAC finisher in both the 100 meters - 11.33 and 200 meters - 22.40 at the Blue Hawk Open on Thursday in Dickinson.

Taylor Miller / Freshman / Jimmie Women's Track & Field / Mandan, ND

Taylor ran a career best time of 26.09 to place second in the 200 meters at the Ron Masanz Classic Meet in Moorhead on Saturday. Taylor also ran the quickest 400 split in the Jimmie 4 x 400 relay team that finished 6th.

Nico Moreno / Junior / Jimmie Baseball / Glendale, CA

Nico, Jimmie third baseman, was 6 for 12 for a .500 batting average, a run scored, and 4 RBI in the 3 games of the A.I.I. Tournament in San Marcos, CA. Nico finished the season with a .329 average, 7 homers, and 35 RBI.

Kayla Roemmich / Junior / Jimmie Women's Track & Field / Bottineau, ND

Kayla won the Discus for the second straight year at the Al Cassell Relays with a season best throw of 137' 11" and placed 4th in the Shot Put, also with her season best 40' 7 ½".  

Nate Christensen / Senior / Jimmie Men's Track & Field / Minot, ND

Nate ran a lifetime best in the 800 meters on Tuesday at the Cobber Twilight Meet in Moorhead, MN.  Nate placed 4th with a time of 1:57.60. Nate ran the same race at the Al Cassell Relays on Saturday, placing 2nd in 1:59.74.

DJ Johnson / Junior / Jimmie Softball / Missoula, MT

DJ pitched her way to a 3-0 record for the week with a 2.70 ERA. DJ struck out 11 while raising her season record to 11-2.

Kacy Gardiner / Junior / Jimmie Baseball / Boise, ID

Kacy earned a win and a no-decision in two appearances last week. Kacy pitched 7 1/3 innings of shutout ball, giving up only 4 hits and striking out 7.

Rachel Ivelia / Junior / Jimmie Softball / Snohomish, WA

Rachel, the Jimmie shortstop, played errorless ball and rapped out 7 hits in 18 at bats for a .388 average for the week. Rachel scored 4 runs, drove in 6 runs, while launching 3 home runs and a double. 

Nick Smart / Sophomore / Jimmie Baseball / Westminster, CO

Nick earned a win and a save for the Jimmie baseball team during the week. Nick pitched 3 innings in relief, striking out 6 while allowing one earned run on 2 hits. The Jimmie baseball team completed a 3-0 week.

Kayla Byle / Sophomore / Jimmie Women's Track & Field / Kalispell, MT

Kayla won the 400 Meter Hurdles for the second straight week, running a time of 70.04 in extreme wind at Aberdeen on Friday. Kayla also ran a leg on the 2nd place 4 x 400 meter relay team. 

Jack Bietz / Junior / Jimmie Men's Golf / Bismarck, ND

Jack won the 2-day tournament in Dickinson with scores of 75-77=152, leading his team to victory in the 4-team event. It was the 3rd tournament victory for Jack, including Fall golf.

Christina Zamora / Sophomore / Jimmie Women's Wrestling / Orange County, CA

Christina placed second at the final Olympic Trials qualifier of the season on Sunday in Des Moines, Iowa. Wrestling at 72 kilograms, Zamora won 3 of her 4 matches - including two by pin - to qualify for the U.S. Olympic Trials April 20-22 in Iowa City, Iowa. Zamora defeated two wrestlers from powerful Oklahoma City University. Only the top two finishers in each class advanced to the Trials.       

Trent Roemmich / Sophomore / Jimmie Track & Field / Linton, ND

Trent won the 400 meter hurdles in a NAIA national qualifying time of 54.12, finished 2nd in the 110 meter hurdles in 15.47, and ran a leg in the 2nd place 4 x 100 relay team for the Jimmies Saturday at the Blue Hawk Open in Dickinson.

Erie Bragg / Senior / Jimmie Women's Wrestling / Carrollton, Texas

Erie reached the finals of the USA Wrestling University Nationals in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma in the 77 kg weight class. Erie won her first and second round matches 2-1 and 2-0 scores, losing in the championship match.      

Derek Wallace / Senior / Jimmie Baseball / Oxbow, Saskatchewan, Canada

Derek, Jimmie first baseman, had an incredible game on Sunday with 3 hits in 5 at bats, including 2 grand slam home runs and a double. Derek drove in 8 of the 18 Jimmie runs in a win over Dakota State.

Adam, a right handed pitcher, threw a complete game 4 hitter in a 7-0 win over Midland Lutheran. Adam struck out 5 and allowed only one walk.

Heather Haegele / Senior / Jimmie Softball / Kalispell, MT

Heather rapped out 15 hits in 28 at bats for a .536 average on the Arizona trip. She scored 9 runs and drove in 6. Heather had 3 doubles and a home run, while walking 4 times.     

Matt Achter / Freshman / Jimmie Baseball / Fargo, ND

Matt was 16 for 24 at the plate for a .667 average for the week with a slugging percentage of .833.   He scored 9 runs, stole 6 bases, and drove in 5 runs. He had 2 doubles and a triple. He also walked twice.

Kate Johnson / Junior / Jimmie Softball / Victoria, BC, Canada

Kate, Jimmie first baseman, helped lead her team to wins over Calumet and Sienna Heights on their Arizona tour. Kate drilled out 4 hits in 7 at bats in the two games, including a grand slam home run and 2 doubles. Kate scored 2 runs and drove in 5.   

Pat Nord / Junior / Jimmie Men's Wrestling / Enderlin, ND

Pat earned NAIA All-America honors on Saturday by placing 3rd in the 165 lb weight class at the NAIA National Tournament in Des Moines, Iowa. Pat won 4 of 5 matches in the tourney to earn a place on the award stand.

Jessica started pitching the first four games for the softball team. She had 21.2 innings pitched and recorded 11 strikeouts. Jessica earned two wins and allowed a .282 opponent's batting average.

Wes Hardy / Senior / Jimmie Baseball / Renton, WA

Wes was the winning pitcher in the season opening 7-0 win over Minnesota-Crookston for the Jimmies. He threw 6 innings, allowed 0 runs on just 4 hits, and recorded 4 strikeouts.

Mallory Johannes / Senior / Jimmie Women's Track & Field Team / Sartell, MN

Mallory won the high jump at the Bemidji Twilight Indoor Meet on Thursday. Mallory jumped 5' 1 ¾", with near misses at the NAIA qualifying standard of 5'3 ¾". Mallory also ran a leg in the 4 x 400 Relay.  

Matt Johnson / Freshman / Jimmie Men's Track & Field / Jamestown, ND

Matt recorded two career best marks in winning the Triple Jump - 43' 5" - and finishing 2nd in the Long Jump - 20' 5" - at the Bemidji Twilight Indoor on Thursday.

Jolynn Warnes / Freshman / Jimmie Women's Track & Field / Kensington, MN

Jolynn placed second in the Bison Open Pentathlon on Friday in her first ever multi-event competition. Jolynn scored 2782 points and had personal bests during the weekend in the Long Jump (16' 5 ¾"), 60 Hurdles (9.68), High Jump (4' 8 ¼"), and Triple Jump (34' 3 ½").

Jarann Johnson / Senior / Jimmie Men's Track & Field / Redding, CA

Jarann ran a career indoor best 50.74 to place second in the 400 at the Bison Open on Saturday in Fargo. Jarann also led the Jimmie 4 x 400 team to a season best time of 3:24.36 and a 3rd place finish. Jarann ran a sparkling 49.5 split in the relay.

Hannah scored 23 points and dished out 7 assists in DAC wins over Valley City and Dickinson the past week.

Mark Hoge / Sophomore / Jimmie Men's Basketball / Ironton, MN

Mark averaged 15.5 points per game, 3 rebounds and 2 assists per game, while hitting on 9 of 14 shots from the field in 2 DAC games this past week. Mark was 4 of 6 from the 3-point arc.

Chelsie was the lone Jimmie to capture All-America honors when she placed 6th in the 191 pound division in the WCWA (Women's College Wrestling Association) National Meet in Bristol, Tennessee.

Travis Burley / Senior / Jimmie Men's Basketball / Warrenton, GA

Travis led the Jimmies to their 20th win of the season with a 20 point - 10 rebound effort in a Saturday night win at Mayville State.

Ashley Cooper / Senior / Jimmie Women's Track & Field / Laurel, MT

Ashley placed 3rd in the 55 hurdles in a season best 9.44, placed 5th in the 55 dash in 8.12, and ran the fastest leg on the winning Jimmie 4 x 400 meter relay team at the Northern Triangular in Aberdeen on Saturday.    

Trent Roemmich / Sophomore / Jimmie Men's Track & Field / Linton, ND

Trent won the 55 meter hurdles in 7.94 - just missing the NAIA indoor qualifying standard and also ran a strong leg on the second place 4 x 400 meter relay team at the Northern Triangular on Saturday in Aberdeen.

Taylor won the high jump with a leap of 5' 2 ¼" in her first meet of her Jimmie career at the Bemidji Super 8 Open on Saturday. Taylor also ran a leg on the 3rd place 4 x 400 meter relay to lead the team in points scored for the meet.  

Dave Londe / Junior / Jimmie Men's Track & Field / Cheyenne, WY

Dave ran a career best time of 16:30.18 in the 5000 meter run to place 3rd in the Bemidji Super 8 Open on Saturday in Bemidji, MN.

Kellie Schuneman / Senior / Jimmie Women's Basketball / Lino Lakes, MN

Kellie scored 26 points on 9-13 shooting, including 3 of 5 from beyond the arc. She was 5 of 8 at the line, collected 4 rebounds, and dished out 3 assists in wins over SD Tech and Oglala. 

Jaykob Miller / Sophomore / Jimmie Men's Wrestling / Etiwanda, CA

Jaykob won 4 of 5 matches to capture 3rd place in the Hastings Quality Hotel Open in Hasting, NE.  Jaykob once again met NAIA National qualifying criteria.

Byron Jones / Senior / Jimmie Men's Basketball / Glenarden, MD

Byron led the Jimmies to a 60-56 win over the # 18 ranked NAIA team - Warner Southern of Florida on Monday in Lake Wales, Florida.   Byron scored 17 points to lead the team, including a perfect 12 for 12 from the free throw line. Byron also grabbed 4 rebounds and dished out 3 assists. Bryon nailed down the win with a rebound and two free throws with seconds remaining.

Tiffany Sluik / Senior / Jimmie Women's Wrestling / Mason City, IA

Tiffany was the lone Jimmie in the Senior National Open Meet in Arlington, Texas, on Saturday. Tiffany recorded a 3-2 record in the elite competition for spots in the Olympic Trials. Tiffany defeated the # 3 ranked wrestler and her only losses were to the # 2 ranked wrestler and the cadet World Champion in close matches. Tiffany missed qualifying for the Olympic Trials by one round.

B.J. Mertens / Senior / Jimmie Men's Basketball / Devils Lake, ND

B.J. scorched the nets with four 3-point baskets on his way to 14 points in leading the Jimmies over Southeastern College in Florida on Saturday. The 13th ranked Jimmies won a 62-58 decision over the NAIA 15th rated Southeastern team.

Bridget averaged 14 points and 6 rebounds per game while shooting 66% from the field in 3 Jimmie wins.

Marlon dominated his Minot opponent 20-7 in the 174 # class to pick up a win in the dual with Minot State on Wednesday.

Maggie, a 5' 7" guard, led the Jimmies with 8 assists against Oglala Lakota on Sunday. Maggie also hit 2 of 3 shots from beyond the 3-point arc, grabbed 5 rebounds, made 2 steals, and scored 6 points.

Michael wrestled an amazing 6 matches, finishing 5-1 and earning 3rd place in his weight class at the Battle of the Rockies Tournament on Saturday.

Bridget scored 38 points in 2 wins this past weekend at the Dickinson State Tourney. Bridget was 5 for 9 with 9 rebounds in a 90-81 win over Rocky Mountain and 8 for 12 with 5 rebounds as the Jimmies defeated Montana-Western 78-65 to move up to 19th in the NAIA national poll. 

Davon Thomas / Sophomore / Jimmie Men's Basketball / Gaffney, South Carolina

Davon averaged 15 points and 4 rebounds while shooting 73% from the floor to lead the Jimmies to 3 wins and a jump in the polls to #18 in the NAIA.

Tiffany Sluik won all 3 matches at the Can/Am duals. She wrestled up a weight class to give the team a stronger line-up. Tiffany won each match by technical superiority. Tiffany has a season record of 7-1.   

Pat Nord / Junior / Jimmie Men's Wrestling / Enderlin, ND

Pat, wrestling at 174 lb, finished 2-2 against very tough competitioin in the Finn Grinaker Open tournament in Moorhead to finish 6th . Pat has placed in every tournament he has wrestled this season.

Katie accounted for 26 kills, 15 block, and 25 digs in 3 matches in the A.I.I. Tourney in Arizona. Katie was selected to the A.I.I. All-Tourney team and also earned first team All-Conference honors.  

Jaykob Miller / Sophomore / Jimmie Men's Wrestling / Etiwanda, CA

Jaykob placed second at the Dakota Wesleyan Open on Saturday to qualify for the NAIA tourney. He also won his dual match against a Regina opponent to help the Jimmies win their first dual meet. Jaykob is currently 6-4 on the season.

Amber Ramlo / Junior / Jimmie Women's Basketball / Jamestown, ND

Amber scored 15 points in two Jimmie wins, including the game winning basket in the late seconds to defeat Northwestern College - the # 1 ranked team in the NAIA - on Saturday. Amber also collected 14 rebounds and was perfect from the free throw line and from the 3-point arc. 

Justin Slusser / Junior / Jimmie Men's Cross Country / Jamestown, ND

Justin had his most impressive performance of the season as the Jimmie # 2 runner at the A.I.I. Conference Meet in San Marcos, California. Justin placed 37th and ran the 5000 meter course in a personal best 27:59.

Casey scored 21 points, including 5 for 11 shooting from the 3-point arc, collected 7 rebounds, and also had 7 assists in wins over Bemidji State and University of Winnipeg over the weekend.

Austin Dillard / Freshman / Jimmie Men's Soccer / West Fargo, ND

Austin scored the game winning goal in the Jimmie 2-1 win over University of Great Falls - the number one team in the region.

Kayla Roemmich / Junior / Jimmie Women's Basketball / Bottineau, ND

Kayla scored 30 points (12-19 FG), 18 rebounds, in 31 minutes of action over the weekend in helping the Jimmies to two wins over Winnipeg 83-53 and Brandon 101-51.

Dominic O'Connor / Sophomore / Jimmie Men's Soccer / Accrington, England

Dominic performed the hat trick with 3 goals in a 6-1 win at St. Ambrose and then registerd an assist for each goal in a 2-1 win over Viterbo as the team went 2-0 on the weekend.

Aleona breezed to her second straight victory and third of the season in winning the Jimmie Invitational on Saturday, running the 5000 meter Hillcrest course in a personal best time of 18:52.                   

Parker Barrett / Senior / Jimmie Football / Tempe, AZ

Parker had 6 tackles from his defensive end position. He had 2 tackles for loss including 1 quarterback sack in leading the Jimmies to a 28-12 homecoming win over Mayville State.

Madey Hornung / Senior / Jimmie Women's Cross Country / Jamestown, ND

Madey finished 5th of 37 runners in the Roe Granger Cross Country meet hosted by Northern State on Friday. Madey ran the 5000 meter course in 20:19 on a very windy day on the Lee Park Golf Course in Aberdeen.                    

JJ Koerber / Senior / Jimmie Men's Cross Country / North Branch, MN

JJ ran the 8000 meter course in windy Aberdeen on Friday in 28:38 - one of his career best times in finishing 15th in a field of 36 runners at the Roe Granger Invitational.

Emilee hit .333, had 33 kills, 3 aces, and 2 blocks in leading the Jimmies to wins over Dickinson, Minot, and Dakota Wesleyan in the past week.                   

Mikey Whyte / Freshman / Jimmie Men's Soccer / Bray, Ireland

Mikey scored a goal and created a penalty opportunity for the game winner in a 2-1 victory over Rocky Mountain on Sunday.

Aleona placed 20th in the Roy Griak Maroon Division 2 Race on Saturday in Minneapolis, MN. Aleona ran a 6000 meter time of 23:12. Aleona improved from her 87th placed finish as a freshman at this race.                 

Brad Lint / Senior / Jimmie Football / Roseburg, OR

Brad completed 21 of 25 passes for 231 yards and 3 touchdowns in the Jimmie 35-13 win over Mayville State on Saturday.

Heather Brown / Sophomore / Jimmie Volleyball / Montpelier, ND

Heather recorded 35 kills, had a .333 hitting percentage to go along with 14 blocks in 3 matches during the week.                

Tommy Rockis / Sophomore / Jimmie Men's Golf / Roseau, MN

Tommy was the medalist in the first conference golf meet of the year at Dickinson State last Sunday-Monday, carding a 75-71--146. Tommy then finished in a tie for 6th in the Jimmie Invitational held in Carrington on Sunday and Monday. Tommy shot a 78-75-153 to help the Jimmies to their 4th straight team title.

Katie had 36 kills, 13 blocks, and 10 digs in 4 matches as the Jimmies went 3-1 in the UW-LaCrosse Tourney.              

Dave Londe / Junior / Jimmie Men's Cross Country / Cheyenne, WY

Dave was the leading Jimmie runner in 20th place overall in the talented field at the Randy Smith Invite on Friday, hosted by MSU-Moorhead. Dave recorded a lifetime best of 27:05 over the 8000 meter course near Glyndon, MN.

Kelsey Ross / Freshman / Jimmie Women's Golf team / Long Prairie, MN

Kelsey shot a 78 to win her the first collegiate tournament she competed in at the Jimmie Open. She was the only golfer who shot in the 70s and finished 4 shots ahead of her nearest competitor.            

Jack Bietz / Junior/ Jimmie Men's Golf Team / Bismarck, ND

Jack shot a career best 71 enroute to winning the Jimmie Open last week. Bietz's 71 helped secure a tie for 1st with Minot State for the Men's Team title in their opening tournament.

Hannah scored 4 goals in two matches, a 2-2 tie with Dakota Wesleyan and a 3-2 win over Waldorf in OT. Hannah got the 3-goal hat trick in scoring all of the Jimmie goals vs Waldorf.          

Zach Gjovig / Senior / Jimmie Football / Crosby, ND

Zach, playing on the defensive line, had 9 ½ tackles in the Jimmies 23-20 overtime win at South Dakota Mines on Saturday.

Aleona Reyes / Freshman / Track & Field / Belen, NM

Aleona became a DAC Champion last weekend, winning the 800 Meter Run in a career best time of 2:19.37. She also placed second in the 1500 with another career best of 4:48.71, placed 6th in the Pole Vault with a mark of 8' 2 ¼", and scored an addition point for the team with an 8th place finish in the Heptathlon with 3200 points. Aleona scored 21.5 points for the Jimmie team, helping them to a second place finish at the DAC Outdoor Championships.  

Tim Penner / Senior / Baseball / Steinbach, Manitoba (Canada)

Tim led the Jimmies at the plate, going 4-11 (.363) with 2 doubles, a grand slam home run, and 8 RBI's during the first round of the NAIA National Championships held in Joliet, IL.

Steph pitched a no-hitter in a Jimmie 1-0 victory over Dickinson State in the second round of the DAC Tournament.

Nate ran a career best time of 1:57.02 in the 800 meter run to place 5th in the Ron Masanz Classic in Moorhead

Sarah Skipper / Senior / Track & Field / Lewistown, MT

Sarah won the 100 hurdles and helped the Jimmie 4 x 400 meter relay team to a qualifying time of 3:56.40 on Friday at the Al Cassell Relays - then broke her own school record and won the DAC Heptathlon title in Dickinson on Sunday and Monday. Sarah scored 4657 points to eclipse her previous record by 15 points. Sarah won the high jump, 100 hurdles (14.98), long jump (17' 5 ½"), and 200 (25.60) on her way to the title. Sarah is currently ranked 8th in the NAIA in the heptathlon. 

Andy Racus / Senior / Baseball / Federal Way, WA

Andy batted .515 in a busy ten game week for the Jimmies. In 33 at bats, he had 17 hits including two doubles and two home runs, scored seven runs, had 11 RBI, walked three times and stole a base.

Marissa Curry / Senior / Track & Field / Gillette, WY

Marissa won the 400 meter hurdles in a career best and NAIA national qualifying time of 63.79 at the Doane Relays on Saturday in Crete, Nebraska. Marissa also had the best two triple jumps of her career, placing 4th with a leap of 35' 9 ¼".  

Jesse Ramirez / Senior / Baseball / Santa Fe Springs, CA

Jesse was 5 for 7 in two games with a double, 3 home runs, 3 walks, 5 runs scored, and 9 RBI. Jesse hit .714 with a slugging percentage of 2.143 in the double header.

Kelsie Jensen / Sophomore / Softball / Gull Lake, SK (Canada)

Kelsie pounded out 8 hits in 24 at bats and drove in 5 runs over the week. She hit 5 doubles, stole 4 bases in 4 attempts, and scored twice. 

Kameron Hunter / Freshman / Men's Golf / Gillette, WY

Kameron shot 82-78 to finish 7th in a field of more than 30 golfers in the SD School of Mines Invite in Rapid City. Kameron also moved up to 7th in the DAC standings and is only one spot away from All-Conference status.

Kayla Roemmich / Sophomore / Track & Field / Bottineau, ND

Kayla won the shot put on Saturday at the Morris Open Meet with a career best throw of 41' 2 ¼" and finished 3rd in the discus with 112' 9".  

Jarann Johnson / Junior / Track & Field / Redding, CA

Jarann was the winner of the 400 meters on Saturday at Morris with a time of 51.31. Jarann also placed 8th in the 200, running it in 23.57.

Amy Shadinger / Senior / Softball / Camarillo, CA

Amy batted .350 on their recent South Dakota road trip with a home run, a pair of doubles, and five RBI's. The Jimmies are currently 10-16 overall and 2-2 in the conference.  

Alex Kreis / Senior / Baseball / Grand Forks, ND

Alex tossed a complete game shutout in a 1-0 win over Mayville State on Saturday in Sioux City. Alex only allowed five hits while striking out seven and walking three. The Jimmies are currently 10-6-1 overall & 2-2 in conference play.

Celene went six for 13 during the Husky Dome Invite this past weekend as the Jimmies went 2 - 2 during the tournament. While batting .461 on the trip, she also added a couple of RBI's and two stolen bases.

Tony Fagen / Junior / Baseball / Carson City, NV

Tony tossed a complete game no-hitter against Midland Lutheran University on Sunday in a 8-0 victory for the Jimmies. Fagen went seven innings not allowing a hit while striking out eight and walking two. The Jimmies improved to 8-4-1 after going 4-1 on a Nebraska road swing.

March 7-13, 2011

Erica Rush / Junior / Softball / Augusta, KS

Erica hit .435 during the opening spring trip to Kansas and Arizona last week. She went 20-46, scored 14 runs, while driving in 13 RBI's including a five doubles, a triple, and home run on the trip. The Jimmies finished the week going 6-10.  

Ryan Iliff / Senior / Baseball / Gillette, WY

Ryan, a senior lefty, pitched 10 plus innings on the Jimmie trip to Florida, giving up only 4 runs, striking out six and walking none in his two outings.
