Matt Murken - Head Coach - 2nd Season
Coach Matt Murken has had much success in his first two years at Jamestown College.
In 2012 Jamestown finished the season 25-7, won the Dakota Athletic Tournament and Regular Season Championships, and advanced to the NAIA National Tournament. Murken was named the Dakota Athletic Conference Coach of the Year as the Jimmies garnered three All Conference Selections, the Conference MVP, and the Conference Defensive Player of the Year. The 2011-2012 Jimmies were in the top ten nationally in seven statistical categories and set an all time DAC record for points per game allowed. The team also had three NAIA Scholar Athletes, a feat that was topped by only one program in the country.
In 2010-11, Murken led the Jimmies to an impressive 21-9 record and fell just short of advancing to the NAIA national tournament in his first season.
Murken came to Jamestown College from Des Moines Area Community College where he was an assistant coach for the Bears during the 2009-10 season. He previously spent six seasons at Wayne State College in Nebraska as an assistant coach, recruiting coordinator, camp coordinator and academic coordinator.
Prior to Wayne State, Murken was an assistant at Mount Mercy College, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He has also worked as a coach and clinician at basketball camps and clinics across the country. In the summer of 2008, he toured Kenya with Athletes in Action, an organization conducting clinics for coaches from the Kenyan National Team, Kenyan and Ugandan colleges, the Kenyan professional league, and area high school teams.
A native of Cedar Rapids, Murken earned his bachelor's degree in 2000 from Concordia University, Seward, Neb. During his playing career, the Bulldogs made three trips to the NAIA national tournament, and he was twice named to the NAIA Academic All-American team. He earned a master's degree in sports management from Wayne State in 2006.
