WALNUT RIDGE, Ark.-- The Jimmie women's soccer team remained undefeated, scoring four second-half goals on the way to a 5-1 victory over Williams Baptist (Ark.) Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Sophie Bales (JR/Camarillo, Calif.) struck early for the Jimmies (4-0), putting home her first goal of the season in the third minute. Her header, set up by a cross from Connie Contreras (SR/Gilroy, Calif.) and Dianne Miranda (SR/Tustin, Calif.), found the right corner of the net.
Phoebe Edwards (SO/Adelaide, Australia) made it 2-0 Jimmies just twenty-nine seconds into the second half. Edwards scored her third in three matches on a middle of the field kick from 25 yards out.
Juliet Ramirez (JR/Fairfield, Calif.) gave UJ a three-goal lead with her first of the season, coming in the 50th minute.
The Eagles (1-2) got one back in the 61st minute from the foot of Carlee Spears. She scored on a penalty kick, just slotting the ball past Jimmie goalkeeper Lauren Sayler (JR/Bismarck, ND), making it 3-1.
Twenty-seven seconds later, Hughes made it 5-1 with her second of the season, assisted by Ramirez.
HAT TRICK (3 TAKEAWAYS FROM SATURDAY'S MATCH):
1. The penalty kick by Spears was WBU's only shot of the game. The Jimmies finished with 20 shots, 14 of them on goal.
2. Jamestown is now 8-1 in its last nine games. Before a season-ending loss to Bellevue in 2016, UJ had won four straight and tied the previous match for a five-game unbeaten streak.
3. The Jimmies scored five goals in a match for the first time since a 6-0 win against Waldorf on November 5, 2015. It is the eighth time under head coach Nick Becker UJ has scored five or more in a single match, winning all eight.
UJ will play Central Methodis (Mo.) on Monday in a noon kickoff.
