JAMESTOWN-- Hastings (Neb.) scored three touchdowns in a span of 4:56 in the first quarter and the Jimmie football team managed just 216 yards of offense as the Broncos won 31-3 Saturday at Rollie Greeno Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Anthony Cloyd connected with Jordan Johnson on a 13-yard scoring pass at the 8:11 mark of the first quarter. Alex Stogdill's extra point made it 7-0. Following a Jimmie punt, Tahj Willingham broke free for a 70-yard run to paydirt, and with a Stogdill extra point, Hastings led 14-0.
The Broncos forced Jamestown to punt on the ensuing drive, and for the second straight possession, Hastings would score on next play. This time, Travis Agagah rumbled for a 43-yard touchdown. Stogdill's third extra-point of the quarter made it 21-0 eleven minutes and 45 seconds into the game.
UJ got on the board in the second quarter courtesy of Chandler Johnson (FR/Albuquerque, N.M.)'s 27-yard field goal at the 8:52 mark to make it 21-3. The field goal capped off a 70 yard, 13 play drive that took 7:16 off the clock.
Cloyd scored the final Hastings touchdown on an eight yard run with 7:13 in the game, then Stogdill closed out the scoring with a 32-yard field goal just under three minutes later.
Willingham ran for 123 yards on 18 carries. Cloyd completed 15 of 24 passes for 114 yards and a touchdown, and also carried 12 times for 70 yards. Johnson caught three passes for 68 yards.
Jamestown threw for just 65 yards on the day. Dylan Klatt (SR/Crookston, Minn.) completed 7 of 23 passes for 33 yards while Jordan Mann (SO/Bismarck, N.D.) was 2-for-3 for 32 yards. Allen Jevning (FR/Brainerd, Minn.) ran for 64 yards on 16 carries, and Jimmy Hatch (SO/Sacramento, Calif.) added 63 yards on 10 carries. Branden Edwards (SR/Apache Junction, Ariz.) had five grabs for 31 yards.
INSIDE THE HUDDLE:
The Jimmies punted on five of their six first-half possessions. UJ also had the ball when the whistle blew at the end of the first half. The second sixty minutes did not go any better for Jamestown, as four drives ended in punts and three ended with an interception...The Hastings defense did not allow Jamestown to cross midfield until the Jimmies' 22nd play...Aundre Purnell (FR/Garden Grove, Calif.) and Keith Rogers (SR/San Diego, Calif.) both finished with eight total tackles (6 solo, 2 assists)...Zach Phillips (JR/Greenfield, Ind.) and Morgan Borland (SO/Brownsville, Texas) each recorded a sack...Borland and Bisherie Steward (SO/Rialto, Calif.) had two tackles for loss...UJ's defense failed to force a turnover for just the third time in the last 12 games...Time of possession was in favor of the Jimmies, 34:26 to 25:34, and both teams ran 61 plays. However, Hastings averaged 5.8 yards per play to Jamestown's 3.5, and outgained the Jimmies on the ground 239-151.
Jamestown welcomes top-ranked and defending national champion Saint Francis (Ind.) on Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:00 p.m., an hour earlier than usual.
