SIOUX CITY, Iowa-- Three different players scored goals and the Jimmie women's soccer team held off Morningside for a 3-2 win Saturday.
The win improves UJ's record to 2-0 while the Mustangs dropped their season opener.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Phoebe Edwards (SO/Adelaide, Australia) put the Jimmies ahead 1-0 after 15 minutes with her first goal of the season from a pass by Brianna Kulla (SO/West Fargo, N.D.). Just five minutes later, Lateasha Hughes (JR/Minot, N.D.) doubled Jamestown's lead with her first goal of the year to make it 2-0.
Merle Bublitz scored on a penalty kick in the 26th minute to bring Morningside within a goal at 2-1.
Neither team scored in the final 19 minutes of the first half as the Jimmies took a one-goal lead into intermission.
Jamestown took a two-goal lead for the second time in the match in the 67th minute, as Kristin Breaux (FR/Chino, Calif.) opened her UJ goal scoring account and made it 3-1. Breaux, who became the fourth Jimmie player to score this season, took a pass from Shelby Webb (JR/Alta Loma, Calif.) and beat Morningside goalkeeper Nicole McGuire.
Bublitz scored her second of the match just five minutes from full time to make the score 3-2. Melody Culbertson earned the assist.
HAT TRICK (3 TAKEAWAYS FROM SATURDAY'S MATCH):
1. Jamestown outshot Morningside 9-7 and had a 7-4 advantage in shots on net. Edwards and Hughes each had two shots on goal.
2. Since 2013, the Jimmies have won 23 straight games when they score three or more goals. The last time UJ scored three and lost was September 12, 2013, in a 4-3 loss at Northern State (S.D.)
3. UJ has now won its opening two matches in back-to-back seasons. In 2016, Jamestown won three straight and four of five to open the year.
