JAMESTOWN -- Nicole Bologna (SR/Anaheim Hills, Calif.)'s goal in the 64th minute broke a scoreless tie and the Jimmie women's soccer team opened the 2017 season with a 1-0 win over Northwestern (Iowa) College Monday.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Bologna had two shots go wide in the 50th and 53rd minutes, while Juliet Ramirez (JR/Fairfield, Calif.) had a shot deflect off the crossbar in the 52nd minute that would have give the Jimmies their first goal.
Connie Contreras (SR/Gilroy, Calif.) had an excellent scoring chance in the 62nd minute, but Northwestern goalkeeper Naomi Schimmel was able to make the save and keep the score 0-0.
Nicole Morrison (SO/Idaho Falls, Idaho) found Bologna from about 25 yards out, and Bologna's left-footed strike found the top near-side corner.
The Jimmie defense held tough against the Red Raiders, allowing just three shots, one of which was on goal. Lauren Sayler (JR/Bismarck, ND) turned away the only shot to register the clean sheet.
HAT TRICK (3 TAKEAWAYS FROM MONDAY'S MATCH):
1. Bologna's goal was the fourth of her career and second in her last three games. She last found the back of the net against Viterbo (Wis.) on November 4, 2016, in the North Star Athletic Association conference tournament.
2. The Jimmies outshot the Red Raiders 17-3 and had a 6-1 advantage in shots on goal. Last season UJ was 7-2-1 when it outshot the opponent.
3. UJ avenged a 2-0 loss at Northwestern last season on September 16.
UP NEXT: Jamestown is on the road this weekend with matches at Briar Cliff (Iowa) on Saturday and Morningside (Iowa) on Sunday.
