HUTCHINSON, Kan.-- The Jimmie baseball team saw its season come to an end Tuesday with a 9-5 loss to Tabor (Kan.) in the first elimination game of the Hutchinson bracket.
UJ got on the board first in the bottom of the first. Landon Uetz (SR/West Fargo, ND) smashed a two-run homer to put the Jimmies up 2-0.
Tabor answered with four runs in the next half-inning to take a 4-2 lead. RBI singles by Colton Flax and Haydon Mahe-Liessmann along with a two-run single by Kyle James chased Jimmie starter Brad Bennett (SR/Hillsboro, OR).
Taichi Sasaki (JR/Sakai, Osaka, Japan) scored in the bottom of the third to cut the Tabor lead to 4-3. Sasaki came on as a courtesy runner for Quinn Irey (JR/Bismarck, ND), who singled with one out. Sasaki stole second and advanced to third on a ground out before advancing home on a wild pitch by Edwin Suarez.
The Blue Jays countered with a single run in the top of the fourth, then added three more in the fifth, thanks to a single by Flax and triple by Mahe-Liessmann.that scored two.
Jamestown would score a run in the fifth and add another in the sixth on a solo home run by Christian Shouman (SR/Lake Stevens, WA) to cut the deficit to 8-5, but AJ Shaw homered in the top of the eighth for an insurance run to increase Tabor's lead to 9-5.
Bennett took the loss after failing to get out of the second. He worked 1 1/3 innings, allowing four runs on five hits. Chase Thometz (JR/Sandy, OR) pitched 5 1/3 innings in relief but allowed five runs (four earned) on six hits while striking out seven.
Nico Kelly (SR/Chicago Heights, Ill.) had a perfect 3-for-3 day at the plate for Jamestown, which finished with seven hits. Shouman added a single in addition to his home run.
UJ finishes the season 40-21 while Tabor improves to 42-16.
