VALLEY CITY, N.D.-- Despite a five-and-a-half hour rain delay, the Jimmie baseball team weathered the storm and defeated the Bellevue Bruins 7-6 in 10 innings Monday.
Jamestown beat the Bruins for the second time in two days, eliminating the No. 2 team in the NAIA from the postseason tournament. UJ will face the winner of Monday evening's Mayville State-Valley City State game in the tournament final on Tuesday.
Tyler Ludlow (JR/Port Orchard, WA) opened the scoring with an RBI double in the bottom of the first, bringing home Landon Uetz (SR/West Fargo, ND). The Bruins answered in the top of the second to tie the game at 1.
UJ retook the lead in the next half inning on Christian Shouman (SR/Lake Stevens, WA)'s RBI single. Continuing the see-saw scoring affair, Bellevue drew level with a Joe Moran RBI groundout, then went ahead 4-2 after Derik Bontempo smashed a two-run double in the top of the fourth.
Matt Noll (SR/Bremerton, WA)'s squeeze bunt allowed Shouman to score to bring the Jimmies within a run. Peter Pennylegion (JR/Ferndale, WA) tied the game at four with an infield single that scored Taichi Sasaki (JR/Sakai, Osaka, Japan).
The Bruins scored the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth when pinch-runner Blake Macdonald crossed the plate on an infield hit by Myles Campbell. Uetz made a diving play at third to get to the ball, but was not able to make a play for an out.
Uetz delivered a clutch home run to center field in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game at five and send the game to extra innings.
In the tenth, Bellevue scored a run as Brandon Salmon stole third base, and as Jake Browne went from first to second on the throw, Uetz's throw to second went into the outfield.
With runners on first and third and just one out in the bottom of the tenth, Max Dwyer attempted to pickoff Scooter Turin (JR/Sandy, OR) at first, but his throw went into the the dirt and got away from the first baseman. Quinn Irey (JR/Bismarck, ND) scored easily from third and the game was tied yet again. Turin and Shouman, who drew an intentional walk, executed a double steal to set up runners at second and third. Kory Wolden (JR/West Fargo, ND)'s bunt attempt was popped up and caught for the second out, setting the stage for Nico Kelly (SR/Chicago Heights, Ill.).
Kelly singled up the middle on a 3-2 count and as the ball found just enough room to get through the infield, Turin scored the game-winning run.
Chase Thometz (JR/Sandy, OR) earned the win in relief, getting the final three outs in the 10th after the Bruins scored the go-ahead run. Dwyer took the loss.
Shouman had three of UJ's 13 hits. Uetz and Pennylegion finished with two hits each. Browne had four hits for Bellevue and Todd Nicks had a three-hit game.
Jamestown advances to the NSAA championship game Tuesday at 1 p.m. and will face either Mayville State or Valley City State. The winner will join Bellevue as the NSAA representatives in the national tournament.
