VALLEY CITY, N.D.-- Tyler Ludlow (JR/Port Orchard, WA) was 4-for-4 with a pair of home runs and seven RBI in helping the Jimmie baseball team to an 8-4 win over Valley City State (N.D.) University in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader.
Jerome Byndloss (JR/Las Vegas, Nev.) picked up the win for Jamestown, and in the process set a new Jimmie record for wins in a season with 12. The previous record was 11, set by Tanner Dahl in 2016. Byndloss tossed six innings, allowing one earned run on four hits while striking out seven. Lance Kotter (SR/Boise, ID) pitched the final three innings for the save.
With the Jimmies leading 3-2 in the bottom of the fifth, Ludlow homered to left on a 2-2 count, giving Jamestown a 6-2 lead. He connected an inning later, this time a two-run shot to left, making the score 8-3.
The Vikings scored two runs in the top of the first without the benefit of a hit. Jared Meiklejohn led off with a walk, then scored on an error by Byndloss on a ball hit by Joe Demers. Demers advanced to third on the play and came home on Brady Anderson's ground out.
Ludlow doubled home Landon Uetz (SR/West Fargo, ND) in the bottom of the first, then singled in the third to score Matt Noll (SR/Bremerton, WA). Alex Sablan (SR/Port Orchard, WA) homered to lead off the fourth inning to extend UJ's lead to 3-1.
Nate Bagby was 2-for-4 to lead VCSU. Jacob Van Vacter took the loss, pitching 4 1/3 innings and allowing five runs on six hits. He walked two and struck out two.
VCSU came back in game two, scoring the go-ahead run on a passed ball with two outs in a 3-2 victory.
Ben Bruenjes got the Vikings on the board in the top of the first with an RBI single.
UJ countered with a run of their own in the bottom half as Landon Uetz scored on an error. Uetz would make the score 2-1 in the bottom of the third as his single scored Taichi Sasaki (JR/Sakai, Osaka, Japan).
Jared Meiklejohn tied the game in the top of the fifth with an RBI single to shallow right, scoring Emmanuel Leyva.
Max Koprek was the winning pitcher, working two-thirds of an inning, striking out one. Steven Velarde struck out two of the three batters he faced in the seventh to earn the save. Eric Evans (JR/Weyburn, SK, Canada) took the loss for UJ. He allowed an unearned run in his inning and two-thirds, striking out three and walking four.
Uetz, Ludlow, and Sasaki had the three Jimmie hits. Meiklejohn and Bruenjes both had two hits for VCSU.
The two teams will meet in Jamestown Sunday to conclude the regular season. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. from Jack Brown Stadium.
