LAS VEGAS, Nev.-- Amy Fearnside (SR/Morgan Hill, CA) can make another addition to her ever-growing list of career achievements.
Fearnside defeated Ronna Heaton 7-6 in the 53 kg third place match at the 2017 U.S. World Team Trials, earning a spot on the United States team that will compete in the World Championships August 21-26 in Paris, France.
The two met earlier Friday in the quarterfinals with Heaton taking a 15-10 victory. With a medal and a spot on the national team at stake, Fearnside came through in the clutch.
Heaton led 5-2 with 2:23 left in the match, but Fearnside scored five points, including two takedowns, in a one minute, 52 second span to pull ahead 7-5 with 28 seconds to go. Fearnside conceded a single point with two seconds remaining as the match ended 7-6.
Fearnside opened with an 8-0 win over Kasey Banyon, then following the loss to Heaton, came back with wins of 12-1 over Lindsey Spjut, 10-0 over Cassidy Jasperson, and 8-1 over Deanna Betterman.
Dajan Treder (SR/Anchorage, AK) took fifth place in the same bracket. She opened the tournament by defeating Spjut 4-2, then lost a close 6-4 decision to Betterman. Following wins over Mayra Ramirez (10-4) and Christina Powell (10-0), Trader suffered a 9-6 loss to Heaton, ending her run.
