WEST FARGO, N.D.-- Quinn Irey (JR/Bismarck, ND)'s three-run home run in the bottom of the ninth capped off a five-run rally and the Jimmie baseball team snapped Bellevue (Neb.)'s 27-game winning streak with an 8-5 victory in game one of Friday's doubleheader at Elmwood Park. The Bruins came back to earn a split with a 2-0 victory in the nightcap.
The split puts the Jimmies' record at 30-12 overall and 11-3 in NSAA action, while the Bruins fall to 35-7 and 13-1 in the NSAA.
Bellevue and Jamestown will finish their series Saturday with the first pitch scheduled for 12 p.m.
Game One: Jamestown 8, Bellevue 5
Bellevue took an early lead in the top half of the first, but the Jimmies tied the game in the bottom of the fourth on a Bruin error.
Mark Kane (SR/Tinley Park, IL)'s two-run single in the bottom of the sixth plated two more runs to give Jamestown a 3-1 lead.
The Bruins scored three times in the seventh inning, retaking a 4-3 lead courtesy of Matt Evans' squeeze bunt.
Another squeeze bunt gave the Bruins a 5-3 lead in the ninth, this time by Todd Nicks.
With one out, the Jimmies started their rally. Taichi Sasaki (JR/Sakai, Osaka, Japan) and Kory Wolden (JR/West Fargo, ND) singled to put runners on the corners, then Nico Kelly (SR/Chicago Heights, Ill.)'s sac bunt scored Sasaki and moved Wolden to second. Following an intentional walk to Landon Uetz (SR/West Fargo, ND), Tyler Ludlow (JR/Port Orchard, WA) singled to score Wolden and tie the game at 5.
Irey, down 0-2, hit a homer to left to score Uetz and Ludlow and give Jamestown the win.
Brandon Radmacher (SR/White City, SK, Canada) was the winning pitcher for UJ, striking out the only batter he faced in the ninth. Jerome Byndloss (JR/Las Vegas, Nev.) started but did not figure in the decision. He pitched 6 1/3 innings and allowed three earned runs, striking out nine.
Sasaki had three hits in four trips to the plate. Irey and Peter Pennylegion (JR/Ferndale, WA) each recorded two hits in the win.
Game Two: Bellevue 2, Jamestown 0
The Jimmies weren't able to mount much offense against Bruin starter Colten Barnes, who shut out Jamestown on four hits in a 2-0 win. Barnes struck out seven faced just four batters over the minimum.
The teams traded zeroes through the first four innings before Bellevue scored on a double by Diego Iribarren and a single by Miles Campbell.
UJ had runners at second and third with one out in the fifth, but Barnes recorded a strikeout and an infield out to end the threat.
Brad Bennett (SR/Hillsboro, OR) pitched the first five innings, giving up two runs on seven hits and was saddled with the loss. Tyler Ludlow, Landon Uetz, Peter Pennylegion, and Alex Sablan (SR/Port Orchard, WA) had the Jimmie hits.
