MAYVILLE, N.D.-- The Jimmie men's basketball team overcame a 31 percent first-half shooting performance and held the Mayville State Comets without a three-point field goal in the final 20 minutes in a 59-50 win Saturday.
Both teams struggled to put the ball in the basket in the first half and headed to halftime tied at 21. The Comets made only nine of 27 shots, including 1 of 6 three-point attempts, and UJ connected on just one of its five shots beyond the arc.
There were eight lead changes in the first 4:23 of the second half. Jake Hagler (SR/Cando, N.D.) drained a three-pointer to put Jamestown back in the lead at 32-30, then Riley Henderson (SO/Bismarck, N.D.) and Hagler again sank shots to put UJ up by six with 14:39 to go.
Jacob Havron (SR/Pukalani, Hawaii) gave the Jimmies their biggest lead of the night with 7:20 to play after his basket made it 49-36. Mayville State went on a 7-0 run to get within six points, but Havron and Logan Brown (SR/Roseville, Minn.) combined for the Jimmies' final 10 points down the stretch to preserve the win.
Hagler finished 18 points for Jamestown (11-12, 6-4 NSAA). Havron recorded a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds, and Brown was the other Jimmie in double figures, ending with 10.
Eric Staebler had 18 points and 12 rebounds off the bench for Mayville State (7-12, 1-9 NSAA).
The Jimmies return home Friday to host Waldorf (Iowa) University.
