FORT WAYNE, Ind.-- The Jimmie women's wrestling team split a pair of duals on the first day of the NCWA National Duals, being contested at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum.
Fifteen of the top women's wrestling teams are taking part in the two-day event, which features 85 teams, including the men's division. Sixty-nine of the competing teams are nationally ranked.
Jamestown opened the competition against Missouri Baptist University and came away with a 33-14 victory.
Amy Fearnside (SR) (123) and Josselyn Pacheco (SO) (136) earned pinfall victories. Caitlyn Kaz (SO) (130) won by 13-0 technical fall, while Kim Cardenas (SR) (101), Haley Hedgecock (JR) (109), and Trica Martin (SR) (116) all won by forfeit.
In perhaps the most dramatic comeback of the day, Myranda Velazquez (SO) fell behind 10-2 early in the second period, but scored 10 straight points to take a 12-10 lead before finishing with a 13-12 decision victory.
The Jimmies advanced to face Oklahoma City University, the tournament's second-seeded team, in the quarterfinals. UJ put up a strong effort but fell 25-19.
Hedgecock earned a victory by pinfall in her only contested match of the day. Cardenas was a 4-0 winner by decision, and Fearnside won a 10-0 technical fall. Martin had the other Jimmie victory, a forfeit.
