7th inning rally lifts Jimmies past VCSU

JAMESTOWN-- Kory Wolden (SR/West Fargo, ND) singled with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to bring in the tying and go-ahead runs as the Jimmie baseball team came from behind for a 4-2 win over Valley City State (N.D.) Wednesday night at Jack Brown Stadium.

Jamestown loaded the bases with one out, and after Viking reliever Andrew Hirsch (1-1) struck out Jaden Yackley (JR/Lynnwood, Wash.) for the second out of the inning, Wolden singled to center, which allowed Scooter Turin (SR/Sandy, OR) and Luke Rehn (JR/Sunman, IN) to come home.

Turin drove in an insurance run for UJ in the bottom of the eighth, bringing in Jared Berard (FR/Tacoma, WA) with Jamestown's fourth run.

Wolden's single capped off a big night for the Jimmie left fielder. He finished 4-for-4 with a pair of runs batted in as well as a run scored.

Drake Pilat (JR/Winnipeg, MB, Canada) gave Jamestown a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, driving in Wolden with a double.

However, the Vikings responded in their next at bat against Jimmie starter Chase Thometz (SR/Sandy, OR) (2-0). Nate Soulis reached on an error and was lifted for a pinch runner. Emmanuel Leyva, the next batter up, drove the first pitch he saw from Thometz over the left field fence to make it 2-1 in favor of VCSU.

Thometz then retired 22 of the next 25 batters he faced, striking out the side in the eighth. The right hander pitched eight innings and allowed two unearned runs on one hit, walked two, and struck out 13. Eric Evans (SR/Weyburn, SK, Canada) worked a scorless ninth for his first save.

The Vikings did not get their second hit of the game until Ryan Sand led of the ninth with a single to center. Evans then retired the next three VCSU batters on a strike out, fly out, and ground out.

Turin and Pete Pennylegion (SR/Ferndale, WA) also had two-hit games for the Jimmies, who improved to 5-0 this fall.

Max Koprek pitched six solid innings for VCSU but did not factor in the decision. He allowed six hits and one run while walking one and racking up six strikeouts. The Vikings record is now 3-5 this fall.

Jamestown will conclude their fall games with a doubleheader Sunday against Viterbo (Wis.), which will be played at St. John's (Minn.) University.
